Raul De Lara's "Raíces/Roots" at the SCAD Museum of Art

Raul De Lara installs his debut solo museum exhibition Raíces/Roots at SCAD Museum of Art!

From tufted wooden chairs, slouching spades, to kinetic cacti sculptures, Raul De Lara transforms the Jewel Box vitrines into whimsical worlds that honor his family's craftsmanship, speak to the immigrant experience, and celebrate his Mexican roots.

Carving uncanny, playful forms, the New York-based artist blends woodworking techniques with magical realism to create sculptures that tell culturally and personally significant stories. His works often incorporate symbolic materials, like zompantle wood and Tz’ite beans, to convey memories of his upbringing, Mesoamerican legends and rituals, and even paranormal encounters.

Organized by SCAD Museum of Art assistant curator Haley Clouser and presented as part of SCAD deFINE ART 2025.
