SCADcast: 'On Creativity' with Carrie Mae Weems

In times of shared societal woe, we turn to art and culture for deeper understanding. As modern art icon and longtime SCAD friend Carrie Mae Weems shares in this episode, “the arts really do allow us to get closest to our humanity.” Weems is the recipient of a 2013 MacArthur Foundation fellowship — colloquially known as the “genius grant” — as well as an Anonymous Was a Woman Award. Her works and words are truly transformative. Join Weems and SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace as they discuss Weems’ most recent public art initiative, RESIST COVID TAKE 6!, which draws awareness to the ways in which racial inequities have manifested in the COVID-19 pandemic. SCAD is honored to bring this essential initiative to our communities in Savannah and Atlanta, one of the American cities where the project’s message is most urgently needed. Weems also shares her thoughts on creativity in our current moment, the differences between inequality and inequity, and the path toward authorship of your own story with SCAD art history senior Tiva Baloi.
