Community service programs
SERVE is the Savannah College of Art and Design's student-led community service initiative. Student service coordinators facilitate programs that serve local communities while offering students opportunities to gain valuable life skills. SCAD students work with local agencies in a spirit of cooperation while learning the importance of networking, recruiting, project planning, decision-making, promotion, delegating responsibilities and more.
Alternative Spring Break
This annual community-service project takes place during spring break when a team of SCAD students volunteers time to help meet unfulfilled needs in the Savannah community.
Blueprint gives students the opportunity to work on construction projects and other building arts tasks for nonprofits in the Savannah area. This community service organization collaborates with organizations to offer safe and creative building projects that teach students how to build facilities for others while giving back to the local community.
H.E.Art (Healing and Education through Art)
H.E.Art works with cancer survivors at the Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial Health in Savannah. This project allows students to spend time with patients by doing arts and crafts to liven their day and ease patients of their anxieties at the hospital.
Kids Café is a community-service program that visits charitable organizations throughout Savannah and provides art projects for local elementary schools. Through collaboration with nonprofit organizations such as America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, Kids Café enables SCAD students to engage with elementary school children and help them express their creativity through various artistic projects.
Pet Project focuses on helping displaced pets around Savannah by affording students the chance to participate in adoption events and volunteer with non-profit organizations such as the Humane Society of Greater Savannah and Coastal Pet Rescue. This group educates the student body about pet ownership and allows students to socialize with animals and help them find forever homes.
Silver is a community service program that serves older Savannah residents. The group collaborates with charitable organizations to provide creative outlets and fundraising for local senior citizens through art workshops, performing arts events and other creative means.
Participants volunteer throughout the Savannah community ranging from bagging groceries for the elderly, cleaning up the streets of Savannah and Tybee Island, helping with the Rock 'n' Roll marathon, planting trees with the Savannah Tree Foundation, and much more.
This program allows students the chance to volunteer in various events on campus and around Savannah with environmental and sustainable initiatives. These volunteer opportunities will also be open to members of the Savannah community. Some of the events include cleaning up Tybee Beach, planting trees with the Savannah Tree Foundation, helping at the Savannah Wildlife Refuge, and many more!
