At SCAD orientation, hip-hop sensation Silentó performs hit “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)”
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) featured a surprise appearance today by hip-hop sensation Silentó at its Fall 2015 orientation, held at the Savannah Civic Center, 301 W Oglethorpe Ave.
The 17-year-old Atlantan and Capitol Records recording artist closed out the welcome session by performing his viral hit “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” to nearly 4,000 new SCAD students, family members and guests. More than 220 million viewers have watched the official video on YouTube since it was posted on June 25, 2015.
In tandem with the live performance, SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace announced a new university initiative entitled #WatchMeSCAD, inviting SCAD’s incoming students to post a video on social media explaining why their accomplishments should be “watched” throughout the 2015-16 academic year. Select incoming students will be documented at various upcoming SCAD events, and videos of their journeys and achievements will be shared through SCAD’s social media channels.
Disney’s “Big Hero 6” head of animation, Zach Parrish (B.F.A., animation, 2007), also welcomed the new students and their families to their SCAD journey and encouraged students to partake in all of the opportunities that SCAD affords them. Stressing collaboration, pushing beyond one’s comfort zone and traveling to all of SCAD’s locations, Parrish underscored the influence his SCAD experience had on his career in animation.
