By Michael MacEachern

Savannah College of Art and Design cross country team member Garrett Johnson has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District III Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country College Division First Team while Kendra Baird and Beth O’Brien have been named to the women’s first team.

The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America by districts selected the teams and the 10 first-team members will now be considered for Academic All-America honors. The District III College Division consists of all non-NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.

Johnson, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, was the top male runner for the team last season. He had four top 20 finishes last season, including a seventh-place finish at the Greensboro race. Johnson has a 3.73 grade point average as a historic preservation major.

Baird, a sophomore from South Charleston, Ohio, and O’Brien, a junior from Kingston, N.Y., helped the team win three meet titles — The Citadel, the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg and Greensboro College) — last season as well as an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional.

Baird, who has a 4.00 grade point average as a graphic design major, had three top 10 finishes last season, including a third-place finish at the Greensboro race. She also finished 30th at the NCAA regional in November. The NCAA Division III Cross Country Coaches Association named her to the All-Academic Team last season.

O’Brien, who has a 3.75 grade point average as a graphic design major, had four top five finishes last season, including a second-place finish at the Greensboro race. She earned All-Region honors by virtue of her 15th place finish at the NCAA Regionals. She was named to the All-Academic Team for the third time last season.
