Talent surfaces in shared show

Graduating seniors Lindsay Parks and Joshua Neel have timed their joint exhibition to correspond with their graduation from the Savannah College of Art and Design. “The title of the show, ‘Surfacing,’ is related to the timing of the show, i.e. graduation,” said Neel. “It is meant to reflect the idea that the artists are entering into a new phase of life.”

The show includes a series of photographs, “The Couch,” by photography major Parks who uses the constancy of a single backdrop — a couch — to capture the varied personalities of her many subjects. “Many of Lindsay’s portraits are of friends she has made at college, so in some ways the show could be viewed as a visual capsule of the artists’ time in Savannah and their education,” said Neel.

Work by both Neel and Parks focuses on the figure. For Neel, this focus is expressed in media ranging from paintings made from direct observation to collages and digital prints made with appropriated imagery. Humor is present in each body of work. “It [humor] should hardly be mistaken for a true theme of the show,” said Neel. “Instead, it is one tool [we] use to provide the viewer with an instant queue for response or as an invitation for deeper reflection on the work.”

There will be a reception after their graduation at Oglethorpe Row Gallery May 31, 7-9 p.m., during which time they will celebrate not only the opening of their show, but the beginning of their lives as college graduates.

“Surfacing” is on display at Oglethorpe Row Gallery, 406 E. Oglethorpe Ave., through June 5.

Showcase showdown
The Senior Showcase features the outstanding work by students graduating in 2003. The annual exhibition is curated by the exhibitions department and proves an example of the fine work produced yearly by SCAD students. This year’s exhibition includes work in a variety of media from students majoring in fashion, painting, illustration, furniture, metals and jewelry, fibers, sequential art, photography, architecture and graphic and interior design.

“We have it [the show] to showcase the best works that are being produced by graduating seniors,” said Joanne Duran, assistant curator. “Not all majors are represented. It is intended to showcase the highest quality work on campus.”

Work by Erica Anderberg, Anthony Antonellis, Donovan Beeson, Casey Crain, Erin Crandall, Githa Dunker, Amy Greer, Hey-Jeong Lee, Andrew Loder, Jodi Lundin, Jason Thomas Meehan, Luciana Melo, Lonnie Morris, Kishan Munroe, Will O’Donnell, Abigail Perkins, Kadie Renner, Liisa Ruhkala, Claire Sanchez, Corinne Saylor, Dara Lindsey Shady, Jane Shepherd, Leila Singleton, Maria Christina Stacey, Meredith Sutton, Ian Swanson, Stacia Tuzik and Christopher M. White will be on display.

The Senior Showcase is on display at Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., through July 1. The exhibition will be featured at SCAD’s monthly gallery hop, June 6, 5-7 p.m.
