By Michael MacEachern The Savannah College of Art and Design volleyball team ran its winning streak to 10 matches with victories over the State University of New York at Farmingdale (30-21, 30-12, and 30-14) and Kean University (30-18, 30-11, and 31-29) Oct. 19 at the Rams Invitational in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Bees, who have won 18 of their last 19 matches, improved to 22-7. They will return to action Oct. 25 at the Lynx Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. SCAD will play Trevecca Nazarene University at 4 p.m. and Ripon College at 6 p.m. Jessica Clark led the Bees against SUNY Farmingdale with nine kills while Kim Edwards added six kills and seven digs. Ally Schramer led the setters with 20 assists while Mel Leinen added seven. Emily Avery added five blocks and four kills. Against Kean, Clark, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, led SCAD with 10 blocks, eight kills and six digs. Avery, who was named to the All-Tournament team, led the Bees with nine digs and four kills. Edwards, who was named to the All-Tournament team, added nine kills and four blocks. Lindsey Butterworth led SCAD with 10 digs while Schramer contributed 27 assists. The volleyball team defeated Flagler College 32-30, 26-30, 22-30, 30-27 and 15-12 Oct. 16 at the St. Pauls Activity Center. Edwards, who is 38 kills shy of the 1,000 career kill mark, led the Bees with a school-tying 26 kills in a five-game match. Senior Jessica Clark added 18 kills, 16 digs and four blocks while senior Avery led the Bees with six blocks and 15 digs. Butterworth led SCAD with 20 digs while Moody added 12. Schramer collected 59 assists for the Bees. Echols named Assistant Coach of the Year Mens basketball assistant coach Roderick Echols has been named one of the winners of the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award. The winners include 524 high school and college assistant coaches who were selected by a panel of judges from Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine. The winners, men and women involved in virtually every major team sport, hail from all 50 states and the Washington, D.C. The selections were based on thousands of nominations made by athletic administrators, past and current student athletes, fans, and the board members themselves. The criteria included longevity, expertise, contributions to the school and community, and special achievements throughout their careers. Echols, who is one of 18 winners from the state of Georgia and one of four college coaches from the state, begins his seventh season as assistant mens basketball coach for the Bees. He is no stranger to SCAD as he played basketball for the Bees for three years. He was captain of the team in his junior and senior years and started in 74 of 75 games played during his career. Echols led the team in rebounding during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 season. He was also ranked in the top 20 percent of the nations field goal percentage shooters during the 1993-94 season. Echols graduated from SCAD in 1997 with a B.F.A. degree in video and film. Echols is an M.A. candidate in video/film at the college. Womens soccer battles to a 2-2 draw The womens soccer teams battled to a 2-2 tie with Maryville College in double overtime Oct. 20 in Maryville, Tenn. SCAD improved to 7-6-1 while the Scots fell to 8-3-1. SCAD returns to action Oct. 26 with a 3 p.m. match at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. In the 13th minute, Jessica Daniel beat the keeper and found the back of the net to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. SCAD, which outshot Maryville 26-7, answered when Lindy Krakowiaks unassisted goal in the 24th minute tied the match at 1. The tie would not last long as Ashley Gottschang fired a rocket off the crossbar and Jennifer LeBar found the rebound and knocked it home to give the Lady Scots a 2-1 lead at the half. SCADs Jessie Landau scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute to tie the match at 2. Senior forward Amanda Seifert and freshman Laura Johnston scored goals as the University of the South defeated the Bees 2-1 Oct.19 in Sewanee, Tenn. After a scoreless first half, Sewanee took a 1-0 lead on Seiferts unassisted goal in the 62nd minute. SCADs Larissa Stec tied the match in the 72nd minute on an assist by Camille Chu. It was Stecs team-leading 11th goal of the season. Johnston scored the winning goal in the 75th minute on an assist from Hayley Dale. Maryville rallies for 3-2 win over mens soccer Maryville rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the mens soccer team Oct. 20. Maryville improved to 11-3-2 while the Bees fell to 3-11-1. SCAD returns to action Oct. 26 with a noon match at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C. SCAD, which outshot the Scots 26-13, came out of the gates quickly and struck first. Adam Woodruff scored off an assist from Shawn Monaghan in the fifth minute to put SCAD up 1-0. Tony Hall found a crease and scored in the 17th minute off an assist from Fernando Rodriguez to put the Bees up 2-0. In the 24th minute, the Scots started their comeback when Taylor Haney found a loose ball in front of the SCAD net and blasted it home to cut SCADs lead in half. Just 54 seconds into the second half, Quint Webster took a flip pass from Andrew Baumann and raced down field uncontested and scored to tie the match at 2. Seven minutes later the Scots took the lead for good at 3-2 as Webster fired a rocket from 20 yards out. Clayton College & State University scored three first-half goals to blank the Bees 3-0 Oct. 18 in Morrow. Clayton State jumped out to an early lead in the match as sophomore David Dowling took advantage of a short kick by the keeper and drilled a shot over the goalie for a 1-0 lead. Dowlings goal at the 11-minute mark was his sixth of the season. Senior Aaron Hume gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead with his first goal of the season at the 23-minute mark, blasting a shot in the upper right of the goal off a cross from senior Zuca Palladino. Sophomore Mark Coulter provided the Lakers insurance six minutes later, scoring his seventh goal of the season off another assist from Palladino. The two assists give Palladino 14 on the season, tying the single-season school record. Jason Nidiffer also had 14 assists in the 1995 season. Mens soccer to hold contest at final home match The mens soccer team will hold a contest at its final home match of the season Oct. 29 when the Bees host Thomas University in a 6 p.m. match at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. The team will hold a call for entries looking for original artwork in response to the SCAD mens soccer match. The call for entries is open to current SCAD students and entrants must be present at the soccer match to validate entry. Any medium will be accepted and there are no size limitations. Completed work to be considered for the cash prize of $150 must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Nov. 5 to mens soccer coach Bryan Thorp at Habersham Hall.
