Teaching (art or drama)

The SCAD M.A.T. program offers breadth and depth of curriculum through a one-year course of study. The option to take the program online grants students the flexibility to complete the program from any location. Whether studying on-ground in Savannah or online via eLearning, the cohort class begins in summer and covers theories and methods grounded in practical experience.

Community of educators

The cohort format of the program creates a community of learners and a support system. Together, the candidates learn to inspire student engagement, consider cultural and historical contexts, foster high order thinking, collaboration and inquiry.

The M.A.T. in art or drama at SCAD is approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and offers certificate reciprocity nationwide.

Teaching is offered in Savannah and online via eLearning.

Gaining the experience to excel

The program includes a field component that places students in a variety of settings to teach. The candidates become familiar with general instructional strategies associated with the history of the field and recent theoretical developments. They spend 900 hours working in a variety of community settings to acquire the experiences necessary to teach in a classroom.

Students visit at least seven different types of settings, including public, private and Montessori schools, low SES, art academies, summer camps, college preparatory programs and museums.

Students are placed with master teachers in their field of work for mentoring and guidance. An annual professional development conference reinforces student learning through lectures and networking.
