Grant Park Tour of Homes seeks artists and musicians

The Grant Park Tour of Homes is looking for local artists and musicians to participate in the 2008 Grant Park Tour of Homes Sept. 27, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sept. 28, noon - 6 p.m. The 35th annual tour is celebrating Grant Park’s 125th birthday this year; Grant Park was born in a time of beautiful and inspiring art and music. Romanticism and Impressionism were being explored in the art world, while Mendelssohn and Chopin were composing masterpieces. In celebration of this time, the Grant Park tour would like to display art and feature musicians in the 14 featured homes and gardens. All artists and musicians will be also be included in the tour guide book. Tour committee members will work with each artist to place their work in the appropriate homes and assign musicians to homes for short segments of time. The Museum of Design Atlanta invites SCAD-Atlanta students in interior design, graphic design and related fields to submit entries for its inaugural Holiday Card Sale. Boxed cards of selected designs will be available for purchase at the museum galleries and on the MODA Web site Oct. 2-Dec. 20. Submissions should support design rather than fine art, should not include any greeting and should not be specific to any religion. Submit designs in a square format. Each designer who enters a design for the Holiday Card Sale competition also may submit an unlimited number of handmade, one-of-a-kind cards accompanied by an appropriate envelope, box or packaging.

Counseling association holds image competition

The Georgia College Counseling Association invites all college and university students in Georgia to create an image for the GCCA 2009 Annual Conference on St. Simon’s. The theme for the conference is “College Counselors: We Can’t Change the Waves, but We Can Learn to Surf.” The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in a college or university in the state of Georgia. Prizes are $100 for the winning entry and $50 for the runner-up. Students may enter up to three pieces of original work. All work must be reproducible on a T-shirt. Use no more than four, preferably three, colors. The original size must not be greater than 9 by 12 inches. The images must accompany your print on a CD. (Do not submit a CD without a print). Help SCAD celebrate 30 years

SCAD is accepting individual submission proposals for a large-scale installation to be exhibited at the college to commemorate SCAD’s 30th anniversary. One individual canvas each will be displayed from 30 different SCAD artists who submit proposals that best depict SCAD’s evolution since its founding in 1978. Artists whose proposals are selected will receive a $2,000 individual prize and a blank 30-by-30-inch square canvas to bring their proposal to life. The 30 completed canvases will be hung together to celebrate the enormous strides SCAD has made over the past 30 years. Submissions are only accepted from SCAD students, alumni, faculty and staff. Drop off a two-page, 8.5-by-11-inch proposal document to Megan Tatom at Evans Hall, 212 W. Hall St., Savannah, or mail it to her at P.O. Box 3146, Savannah, GA 31402. The proposal must contain a brief description, a sketch, a list of materials and colors being considered for the canvas, a brief artist bio that includes the artist's affiliation with SCAD and major (if applicable), and contact information, including phone and e-mail address. Only one submission per artist will be accepted. Artists will be notified by Oct. 6 if their proposal has been selected. Completed canvases must be delivered on or before Nov. 3. Wearable art show seeks entries

Entries are being accepted for the second "Uncommon Thread Wearable Art Show." Full-garment art selected by jurors Cecelia Kane and Loren Schwerd will be presented at the Louisiana State Museum-Baton Rouge by live models. Only images of the work are needed for submission. This year's theme is "FORCE." Artists are encouraged to apply any interpretation of that theme to their work. Cash prizes of $500, $200 and $100 are awarded to first, second and third place, respectively. The show will take place Oct. 18, 8 p.m. Attendance to the show is free and open to the public. Wearable art show seeks entries
CultureCandy and the Louisiana State Museum-Baton Rouge announced the second annual "Uncommon Thread Wearable Art Show FORCE 2008," Oct. 18, 8 p.m. Selected submissions will be featured in a multidisciplinary presentation. The theme of "FORCE" is meant to give participants a concept that enhances the art's ability to communicate with the audience. "FORCE" can be interpreted by its role in nature, the military, physicality or emotion. Artists can also react against the theme with inspired thoughts of passivity, fragility or subservience. Exhibition focuses on human rights

The Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta seeks original art for "Learn Promote Defend," an exhibition offered in conjunction with "60 Years of Progress…10 Days of Recognition," a 10-day commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Jurors inlcude Sylvie Fortin, editor in chief of Art Papers, and Jodi Hauptman, curator of drawings at MOMA. Entries in all 2-D visual arts media will be accepted. Interested artists should interpret one or more articles of the UDHR and provide a résumé and artist's statement. Selected work will be part of the exhibition and a silent auction to be held Dec. 10 at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta. Six selected artists will have the opportunity to participate in a billboard public art project in coordination with CCHR, planned to begin in 2009 in the Atlanta metropolitan area. International poster design competition open to entries

The seventh edition of the Francisco Mantecon International Advertising Poster Design Competition is open to submissions. Posters must be previously unpublished. Entries must include the image on a CD or diskette, in a PC-readable format, and the original copy of the image printed and affixed to light card stock, suitably protected. Work should be inside a sealed envelope with the artist's pseudonym; also include the artist's full name, a copy of an I.D. card, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and a written acceptance of the competition rules posted online. Harley-Davidson is hosting a "Bikes, Camera, Action!" contest for aspiring female filmmakers. The motor company is searching for female filmmakers who can capture the sense of empowerment, freedom and adventure that is inherent when women get behind the handlebars of their own Harley-Davidson motorcycle in a two-minute short film. Photography exhibition benefits homeless

On Oct. 30, Samaritan House of Atlanta will hold its third annual photography exhibition and reception, "New Beginnings: The Story of Lives Transformed," at the Cator Woolford Gardens in historic Druid Hills. All proceeds of the event will benefit Samaritan House of Atlanta, whose mission is to transform lives by helping homeless men and women gain self-sufficiency through personalized employment readiness and life stabilization programs. This year’s exhibition will focus on hopefulness and success, featuring photographs that show positive images of people and experiences. Austin Film Festival open to entries

The 15th annual Austin Film Festival is accepting screenplay, teleplay and film entries. The festival is scheduled Oct. 16-23 in Austin, Texas. For more information, visit the Web site.

Film categories include narrative feature, narrative short, narrative student short, documentary feature, documentary short and animated short. Postmark deadlines are June 5 for regular entry, July 5 for late entry, and July 15 for very late entry. Submit films using the online submission form.

Screenplay categories are drama and comedy, which each offer a cash prize of $5,000; entrants also may choose to have their scripts considered for the Latitude and Sci-Fi awards of $2,500 each. Regular deadline is May 15; late deadline is June 1.

The teleplay competition includes both drama and sitcom categories and is open to any spec script for any currently airing network or cable television program. Deadline is June 1.

SCAD seeks entries for "Small Works"

The Savannah College of Art and Design invites SCAD students, alumni, faculty and staff to submit 2-D and 3-D work for the annual "Small Works" juried exhibition. Work must measure 18 inches or less in all directions, including the frame if applicable. All work must be for sale, and the artist’s price may not exceed $250. There is no limit to the number of entries an artist may submit; a small, concise body of work is encouraged. Submit a CD, DVD or e-mail with the following:
  • Image(s) of individual work(s) (300 dpi and 5 by 7 inches or greater) with full credit information (artist, title, year, medium, dimensions and artist’s price). Images must show completed work and, for 2-D entries, must incorporate the frame. Name all images to correspond with the title of the work depicted.
  • A résumé including mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, exhibition history (separated into group and solo shows), awards and honors.

Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will not be considered. Artists will be notified of a decision in a timely fashion.

Filmfest seeks groundbreaking documentaries

The True/False Film Fest is heading into its sixth year of celebrating non-fiction film, and is seeking out groundbreaking documentaries from all over the globe. We are particularly interested in films that walk the line between fact and fiction, commenting in some way on the world and on filmmaking itself. The festival takes place Feb. 26, 2009, in Columbia, Mo., and includes panels, parties and screenings. If your film is accepted, you will receive travel, lodging and a festival pass. Early bird deadline is Sept. 30; entry fees are $20 for feature and $15 for short. The regular deadline is Nov. 15, with fees of $25 for feature and $20 for short. The program also offers the artists exposure in Turks and Caicos Sporting Club marketing materials and the possibility of producing commissioned pieces for members. Think Tank is the annual forum of the Institute for Integrated Teaching, which brings together art and design master teachers, administrators and emerging educators to address thematic issues of higher education. Scheduled June 5-10, 2009, at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia, Think Tank 4 will be presented in two parts. “Part 1: Divergence, Convergence, Emergence: Expanding Cross-Disciplinary Creativity” is targeted to senior faculty and focuses on education philosophy and policy. “Part 2: From Theory to Practice: Multi-disciplinary Creativity” focuses on emerging educators and administrators. An emerging educator is a Master of Fine Arts student or adjunct instructor who is entering the profession. The Institute for Integrated Teaching is offering 10 scholarships of $1,000 each to emerging educators or administrators to defray the costs of attendance.
