Artist statement:
"I love drawing, the simple act of putting pencil to paper. There is a problem-solving aspect to the drawing process that I have always enjoyed. And it's a good thing, because like most artists I'm rarely happy with the results. The truth is, I don't think of myself so much as an artist but as a storyteller who draws. I believe that the application of sequence in my work-used to create storyboards and comics-allows me to tell a story more dynamically than any single illustration could allow by combining the written word and visual image over the space of time. "My work has always been very representational in style, and in this way it has lent itself to a very commercial application. Consequently, and in addition to my work in comics, I have worked extensively in the commercial arts, which presents yet another problem-solving aspect to drawing that I enjoy: meeting the needs of the client. This usually means talking with clients, understanding their identity or the identity of their company, determining their specific goals and then transforming these fundamental ideas into images that speak to the consumer."

Artist statement:
"I view myself as a writer who happens to teach. In writing I try to get at the truth as I see it. The path to that truth is sometimes uncertain and always involves taking risks with both the ego and the intellect. No immediately tangible reward leaps forth from the effort either, but I sleep better at night. When I teach, I try to get that across to my students. Writing isn't just a matter of stringing words together in a pleasing way. If any good achievement comes out of it, it must involve sweat and blood and honor and truth and clever lies and the imminent risk of failure while zeroing in on absolution."
