Cass Bird is a photographer whose editorials and sensitive portrayal of artists, actors and musicians have challenged and expanded on ideals of femininity, masculinity and beauty.
Her photographs are included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Bird, along with Le Tigre band member JD Samson, has produced numerous gallery exhibitions and a calendar, “JD’s Lesbian Utopia,” the subject of a solo exhibition at Deitch Projects.
Her fresh, youthful style has made her a sought-after director for music videos by artists including Sky Ferreira, Lissy Trullie and The Raveonettes. Her advertising clients include Nike, Levi’s, Malibu Rum, J. Crew, Target, Maiyet, Max Mara, Benetton, Urban Outfitters, Whistles, Warby Parker, Vans, Keds and Bergdorf Goodman. Her editorial clients include T: The New York Times Style Magazine, GQ, Dazed & Confused, New York Magazine, i-D, MUSE, The New Yorker, British and American Vogue and French Elle.
Bird’s first book, “Rewilding,” which depicted two summers spent with a group of women in a Tennessee artist’s colony, was published in 2012.
