Designer, Alexander Wang; creative director, Balenciaga
Alexander Wang was born and raised in San Francisco, California, and then moved to New York City to attend Parsons The New School for Design. In 2005, he left Parsons to pursue his own label, launching a knitwear collection comprised of six unisex silhouettes. Just two years later, his women’s ready-to-wear collection debuted on the runway, receiving acclaim from fashion industry insiders and consumers around the world.
Since the launch of his namesake label, Wang has received numerous accolades for his designs, including the 2008 Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund award, the 2009 Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year award and the 2009 Swiss Textiles Award. In 2011, Wang was proclaimed Best Menswear Designer of the Year by GQ magazine and the CFDA lauded him as the Best Accessory Designer of the year.
The fashion wunderkind is known for an undone, streetwise-meets-couture aesthetic that is constant through both his eponymous collections and the T by Alexander Wang label. His first flagship New York City store opened in 2011, and today he has more than 15 stores around the world; his men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, along with handbags, footwear and lifestyle items are carried by more than 700 retailers worldwide.
In 2012, Wang was named creative director of Balenciaga, with his first collection for the line debuting in 2013.
