Tax Information The Internal Revenue Service requires that the Savannah College of Art and Design apply specific federal tax withholding and reporting rules to all payments made to individuals classified as nonresident aliens for tax purposes. As individuals who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, international students may be eligible to claim a reduced rate of withholding (including full exemption) pursuant to a tax treaty between the United States and their country of tax residency.
Social Security Numbers F-1 students who will be employed in the United States, including at SCAD, must obtain a U.S. Social Security number. This number is used by the U.S. government to identify wage earners for tax purposes. The student ID number assigned by SCAD to new international students is not a valid U.S. Social Security number.
To apply for a Social Security number, students must obtain a letter from the international student services office confirming their SCAD F-1 status, complete the Social Security application (available at ISSO) and take the application to the Social Security office at430 Mall Blvd. They must also present their passport, I-20 and I-94 form. The office is open 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday-Friday (closed on federal holidays).
Social Security numbers will not be issued to foreign nationals who are not authorized to work.
A Social Security number is not required for opening a bank account, registering for school, filing a U.S. tax form or applying for a driver's license. Students who are required to file a tax return and are not eligible for a U.S. Social Security number have to apply to the Internal Revenue Service for a tax identification number on form W-7.

Visa and Immigration International students and exchange visitors are required by immigration law and regulations to maintain their legal status in the United States. Failure to maintain this status results in losing it and being illegally present in the United States.
To meet the requirement, students must:
1. Keep their passport valid at all times. For information about renewing a passport, students should contact their country's embassy via one of these Web sites:
2. Register full-time as a student during the academic year (as an undergraduate, students register for and complete at least three courses each quarter; as a graduate student, they register for and complete at least two courses each quarter). Exceptions to this regulation include the following: (1) when a medical condition does not allow a student to maintain a full-time course load or (2) if a student is in his or her final quarter of enrollment and under enrolled. In either situation, the student should talk to ISSO staff.
3. Exchange visitor scholars must engage in the activity described on their DS 2019 form.
4. Students should apply for extensions of stay 30 days before their I-20 or DS 2019 expires. (Students should check the I-20 student copy line #5 and/or DS 2019 line #3 for J-1 students and scholars.) Students and scholars must extend their program before it expires.
5. Off-campus employment must not be accepted without official permission.
