At the Savannah College of Art and Design, the office of the dean of students exists to enhance career preparation by promoting a learning-centered environment through meaningful co-curricular opportunities and professional support services.
This office should be the first contact for a student or parent with a medical or family emergency. Staff may assist in getting urgent messages to students and contacting professors in the case of an emergency absence. This office also provides students with assistance regarding any nonacademic problems they may be experiencing.
- Contact faculty and staff in the event a student will be missing class due to illness, hospitalization, death in the family or other special circumstance.
- Hear appeals of judicial decisions made in regard to violations of the Code of Student Conduct. In Atlanta, the initial disciplinary decision is made by the dean of students, and any appeal is submitted to the vice president for student services (912.525.6954).
- Oversee the offices of residence life and housing, student involvement and student conduct, among others. In Atlanta, the office of the dean of students also oversees counseling and student support services, the international student services office, career services and the fitness center.
- Assist in providing student development programs and events that allow students to apply and expand their knowledge, emphasize responsible citizenry and encourage communication with college faculty.
- Help students with nonacademic problems they may be experiencing.
- Assist students with grade disputes or student-faculty disputes. (Contact the chair of the appropriate academic department.)
- Approve course substitution forms or course waivers. (Contact the dean of the academic school under which the course falls.)
- Process withdrawals, incompletes or other registration-related issues. (Contact the registrar's office.) However, in the event a student is hospitalized or otherwise incapacitated, the dean of students may help with the withdrawal process if assistance is requested.
- Handle tuition payments or questions, financial aid issues, or scholarships. (Contact the offices of the bursar, financial aid or institutional advancement.)
