Minors

Careers in art and design require professionals to be nimble, flexible and skilled in more than one area of creative practice. This workplace reality is the reason SCAD students love complementing their courses of study with a minor or double major. For example, a minor in graphic design or photography strategically positions the writing graduate in the ever-changing world of online journalism. A fashion marketing and management student with a minor in advertising is an asset to major clothing retailers in need of employees who understand the language of ad buys and copywriting.

The addition of a minor also introduces students to new and previously undiscovered ways of thinking about their own creative processes. A minor in cinema studies can reveal to an animation student new ways of thinking about the movement of the human form. A minor in design for sustainability can teach a graphic design student to think more holistically about the process of package design. A minor program opens up new avenues for understanding and making surprising work: furniture design and ceramics, fashion and illustration, visual effects and new media art, sequential art and creative writing. The possibilities and combinations are endless.

Students enrolled in any bachelor's degree program may elect to declare a minor outside the major field of study. Each minor program at SCAD includes required introductory-level courses followed by a sequence of advanced courses and/or carefully selected electives, and students may choose to complete more than one minor or apply the hours earned for a minor toward the completion of a second major.

In order to receive designation of a minor on his or her transcript, a student must satisfy the following requirements: declare the minor in writing with a staff adviser, successfully complete a minimum of 40 quarter credit hours (eight courses) as specified in the minor program of study, and maintain an overall 2.0 grade point average in the minor. Some courses have prerequisites that may require additional credits to complete the minor. Consult minor descriptions and course descriptions later in the catalog to ascertain requirements and prerequisites. Required courses in the foundation studies curriculum or in the general education curriculum may count toward a minor.

Course numbers and titles are subject to change.
