Through foundation studies courses, students build visual, conceptual and creative abilities essential to their development as professionals. Students expand their critical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of visual language. They are prepared to evaluate and consider new concepts and materials encountered in major programs and in the professional world.
SCAD has the only dedicated school of foundation studies in the United States. All faculty members have terminal degrees and are dedicated to teaching foundation studies.
Foundation studies consist of studio work augmented by slide lectures, demonstrations, field trips and critiques. In these courses, students learn to manipulate the principles and elements of art while developing technical skills with various tools and media.
