Continuing Education and Summer Programs

Overview

Summer for Educators

SCAD offers a variety of programs for art educators seeking refresher instruction or higher teaching credentials. Art Educators' Forum: Summer Conference provides workshops for art teachers to learn new skills, network with colleagues from around the world and rejuvenate for the coming school year. Participants attend two two-day workshops and one one-day workshop, which may include demonstrations, lectures, studio work and local field trips. Educators are also eligible to enroll in Advanced Placement Institutes, a College Board*-sponsored program that prepares teachers to instruct AP* art history, English or studio art courses. Participants are equipped with the critical information, tools and strategies needed to build and advance successful AP programs at their schools. Educators are also invited to enroll in Educator Summer Seminars, intensive five-day workshops for teachers seeking professional development.

Summer for High School Students

SCAD offers Rising Star programs for students interested in exploring art in an academic setting. Pre-college: Rising Star is a five-week residential program for students who have completed their junior year of high school and wish to earn university credit. Participants enjoy full access to SCAD facilities, including classrooms, computer labs, studios, production suites, libraries, galleries, theaters, bookstores and fitness centers. Students live in a SCAD residence hall and have their meals at a SCAD dining facility.

Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors may enroll in SCAD Summer Seminars, a program designed to facilitate students' exploration of a variety of creative disciplines across the SCAD curriculum. These workshops are available to residential or commuting students and offer opportunities to meet other talented teens from around the world and experience a taste of university life under the guidance of SCAD professors and graduate students.

Art for All

SCAD also offers Continuing Education teen and adult classes and workshops at any skill level in a variety of disciplines throughout the year. These workshops are offered on an open enrollment, non-credit basis to provide educational and personal enrichment for youth, teens and adults. Educator Seminars are offered during the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. They are hands-on, educator focused workshops that include lesson plan ideas, networking, resources and materials.

Children may participate in Art Smarts children's camps, which provide creative learning experiences for students in elementary and middle school to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the arts.
