"I love to teach. After 28 years of teaching at SCAD, I am still excited when I get up in the morning to go to work. When I was offered a job to start a photography program at a college in Savannah, Georgia, that was in its third year of operation with 120 students and 10 faculty, I jumped at the chance. This was in 1982. Twenty-eight years later I am the longest-term faculty member at SCAD, the 'university for creative careers,' with more than 10,000 students and 700 faculty members. We did something right."

Artist statement:
"Landscape is primarily visual. It is about light, color, form and texture. I assemble an image from several photographs of the same place taken at different times to make it aesthetically perfect. Portraiture is emotional pursuit; a good portrait should say something about a person more than what they look like at a given moment. At its best it can look into a subject's soul. An image should have a past, a present and a future. A painter observes a subject over a long period of time, whereas photography only has the present."

Artist statement:
Darlington's work explores the relationship between photographic representation and memory. Memories are an amalgam of events, people and places that are transient by nature and frequently misrepresent actual lived experience. The fictionalized - even dreamlike - quality of these images evokes a timelessness; they represent neither past nor present nor future. Despite their self-evident falsity, we are inexplicably drawn toward their romance and nostalgia, perhaps because they are fictionalized and culturally determined - much like memory itself.

Artist statement:
"As a native artist in contemporary America, I intend my work to be both provocative and educational, carrying an especially urgent message. In one sense, it is intensely personal; yet, in another - by virtue of my background and native roots, as part of an indigenous group struggling for autonomy in the shadow of a dominant one - my work cannot escape an implicit politicism. Dealing with a culture in transition and its fight to survive within the confines of a foreign social structure and economic framework, my imagery explores the inherent ironies engendered by the confrontation of two opposing cultures and belief systems - including contemporary issues of identity and representation, displacement, land rights, indigenous sovereignty and the ambiguity of cultural boundaries."

Artist statement:
"For years my wife collected old photos of children that she found in antique stores. Though I appreciate photographs of all kinds, my interest in these pictures remained only cursory until I was rereading 'Written on the Body' by Jeanette Winterson. In part of the novel titled 'SKIN,' Winterson reminds us that the topmost layer of the epidermis as well as hair is made up of dead cells. This scientific definition devolves into a poetic passage in which the lover is speaking to Louise, who has passed away from leukemia. The lover laments, 'How odd it is that the part of you I was most intimate with was the part that was already dead.' After reading this I realized what these photographs meant to me. These effigies have lost all connection with those who knew the people. This body of my mixed media photo-based works have grown from my relationship with these photographs."

"My photographs are a meditation on the human gesture in the natural landscape. They represent my visual interest in the complex and changing relationship between the natural world and the works of man. My landscape work often takes the form of the long view and dramatic lighting to underscore the scale and complexity of our intimate but frequently destructive connection with the earth. Although I will photograph any site that strikes me, I am primarily drawn to the landscapes to which most of us are routinely exposed and which speak of interaction and change: the views we see from our cars on the way to work, on the highway, in the suburbs, on a drive in the country or on vacation."

"These photographs are about place, culture, society, environment and how these concepts influence us as individuals. I have been documenting the transformation of the American roadside since 1999. Going from here to there, I travel the back roads, frontage roads, business routes and older U.S. highways. By avoiding the expressway I am able to explore visually a place as the locals might. There is the potential for insight into the community and its individuals who have shaped a region and created the character of a place. The environment is loaded with evidence from the past that is now layered with subtle indications about the future."

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day." - Albert Einstein

Incurable:
"We risk being the first people in history to have been able to make their illusions so vivid, so persuasive, so realistic that they can live in them." - Daniel Boorstin, The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, 1961
"'Incurable' explores how we choose to physically create and present ourselves based on internal ideals that we have acquired over time. The forming of these internal ideals is consistently influenced by peers, family members and by the constant barrage of imagery that surrounds us each day. The advent of Photoshop, advances in plastic surgery, and the plethora of media have helped us to maintain a standard of physical perfection that is essentially unattainable, keeping us on a never-ending quest to achieve the physical manifestation of an unrealizable internal ideal."

"My photographs/images are each unique, they are produced using antiquarian photographic processes without a camera. That ritual is akin to alchemy. Mixing the chemistry in a dim light, setting up, waiting for the sun, the long exposures and the final processing (again in dim light) - more often than not render graphic chaos, accidents and fortuitous marvels. That controlled chaos lends humanity to these images, and is at the core of their magic. "
