SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Savannah College of Art and Design will host a book signing with Paula S. Wallace for the newly released A House in the South: Old-fashioned Graciousness for New-fashioned Times on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 5-7 p.m. at Magnolia Hall, 507 Whitaker St. The event is free and open to the public.
From a classic New Orleans antebellum manse to a modern Savannah loft, A House in the South by Frances Schultz and Wallace leads the reader through more than 20 of the South's most remarkably diverse domiciles filled with great design ideas that will work in houses anywhere.
A House in the South features several homes in Savannah including Greg and Kelley Parker's Tybee Island cottage, Arnold and Lorlee Tenenbaum's city loft and Susan Mason's storybook Victorian.
Though interior design has changed drastically over the years in the United States, Southern style has remained a stable classic. Its design traditions value gentility and gracious living above conspicuous displays of status; history and comfort above cutting-edge trends, and hospitality above all. Southern homes reflect a sense of style that honors the past as it embraces the present.
While revealing unique style elements of each residence, A House in the South highlights and inspires the reader to incorporate some of the most timeless aspects of Southern style, including:
- Using wrought iron for decorative elements
- Incorporating the porch as an essential room of the house
- Collecting antique silver to complement the contemporary table
- Using monograms to add a touch of refinement and panache
- Adding touches of Southern style to enhance the kitchen
Throughout A House in the South, Schultz and Wallace explore different design concepts, from the sumptuous to the simple, the traditional to the contemporary and the practical to the unapologetically eccentric. The sidebars highlight a range of topics including decorative ironwork, the importance of porches, the singularity of Southern kitchens and the Southern obsession with family silver.
A House in the South is lively and informative and illustrated with more than 180 stunning full-color photographs, making this book a unique visual treat for anyone enchanted by the eternal grace of the American South.
