SAVANNAH, Georgia - The Savannah College of Art and Design proudly announces that the SCAD Design Group has been given top honors by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Georgia chapter for the interior design of the newly expanded SCAD Museum of Art
SCAD won the Best of the Best (b.o.b) Forum Design Award over all other entries and categories, as well as the Best of the Best Forum Award in the education category.
Each Year the IIDA Georgia Chapter hosts the b.o.b. Forum Design Awards, the highest honor that IIDA Georgia bestows in recognition of design excellence that strives to push boundaries and exceed expectations.
The 2012 IIDA Georgia Awards for SCAD recognizes the monumental design of the new SCAD Museum of Art, an 82,000-square-foot contemporary art and design museum completed in Fall 2011 on the western boundary of Savannah's Downtown Landmark Historic District. The museum site includes the former headquarters of the Central of Georgia Railroad, as well as the masonry ruins of a freight warehouse, both constructed in the mid-19th century. SCAD Design Group's interior designers, many of whom are SCAD alumni, worked with architects and engineers to develop a design program for the Museum that preserved the historic remains of the structure through the incorporation of contrasting modern architectural elements. The interiors team was responsible for the design, fabrication, implementation, and procurement of all interior elements, including lighting, furniture, fixtures, millwork, interactive displays, interior and exterior signage and color texture. Additionally, interior designers were encouraged by museum leadership to engage in a radically hands-on approach, maintaining a continual on-site presence throughout the construction process.
