SAVANNAH, Georgia - The SCAD performing arts department will present the Tony Award-winning musical "Spring Awakening," with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, based on the play by Frank Wedekind, Feb. 29-March 4 at the Lucas Theatre, 32 Abercorn St.

Directed by Michael Wainstein with musical direction by Kevin Wallace, "Spring Awakening" explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood of nearly a dozen young people with an electrifying fusion of morality and sexuality set to the music of a Grammy Award-winning rock 'n' roll score.

When "Spring Awakening" opened it became Broadway's most talked about new musical. "Broadway may never be the same. This brave new musical is haunting and electrifying," hailed The New York Times. The New York Observer called it "the best new musical in a generation," and The Star-Ledger said it was the "most explosive new musical since 'Rent'!"

The show went on to win multiple awards at the 2007 Tony Awards, winning eight of its 11 nominations, including Best Musical, and was hailed as the "Best Musical of the Year" by the New York Drama Critics' Circle, the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle. The cast album won the 2008 Grammy Award.

Wedekind's original 1891 script was once considered so racy that it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete version for nearly 100 years. Set against the backdrop of repressive late 19th century Germany, the story revolves around a group of teenagers exploding with hormones, desire and shame, and an almost total lack of understanding of sex, love and all the rest. The musical, a re-imagining of Wedekind's original play, boldly depicts the complicated, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening with power, honesty and great beauty.

"Spring Awakening" is presented Feb. 29 through March 3 at 8 p.m., and March 4, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission; $15 with senior, student or military ID; $5 with valid SCAD ID; and free with valid SCAD ID for the Feb. 29 performance only.
