SAVANNAH, Georgia - The SCAD performing arts department will present "The Dream," a multimedia dance piece conceived, directed and choreographed by SCAD performing arts Professor Vincent Brosseau at Arnold Hall, 1810 Bull St. on:
  • Thursday, Feb. 9 through Saturday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m.

Summary of the performance

"The Dream" explores the heartaches and hopes of Americans dealing with the challenges of the Great Depression and today's recession.

"I had just finished creating 'The Voyage' about the European immigration at the turn of the 20th century, which SCAD presented last year," Brosseau said. "I thought it would be fascinating to continue this historical journey and explore the late 1920s and '30s and the Great Depression. Through my research, I discovered that the events, causes and effects of that period are eerily similar to those of today's 'great recession.'"

"I call it 'The Dream' because, despite the challenging economic times, Americans from both periods inherently believe that things will get better - that the 'dream' is still alive," Brosseau said. "That unfailing hope is what inspired me."

Multimedia production

The multimedia production of "The Dream" presents the similarities of both periods through a series of abstract vignettes. Each scene is supported by projections of video from both the 1930s and today shown on three mobile screens on the stage.

About Vincent Brosseau

A graduate of The Juilliard School in New York, Brosseau has performed works by such renowned choreographers as José Limón, David Parsons, Paul Taylor and Anna Sokolow. His television credits include the PBS special "Live from Lincoln Center" in which he performed in Paul Taylor's "Cloven Kingdom."

Before coming to SCAD, Brosseau directed the modern dance company, Brosseau Danceworks, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, for six years. In addition to last year's "The Voyage," Brosseau created the dance piece, "The Station" and choreographed "Guys and Dolls" and "Carousel" and created the dance pieces "Silence," "Ripping Souls," and "The Crossing," among others.
