Eduardo Calvo (B.F.A., fashion, 2012) and Natalia Yepes (B.F.A., fashion, 2012) represented SCAD as finalists on Thursday, Sept. 6 on New York Fashion Week runways at Lincoln Center in the 2012 Supima Design Competition.

Calvo and Yepes competed against six other finalists, two each from Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute and Rhode Island School of Design. Each finalist was challenged to produce a capsule collection of women's eveningwear made exclusively of Supima cotton. The eight finalists were chosen from hundreds of graduating seniors among all four schools.

The show was covered by Women's Wear Daily, New York Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and CNBC, among other fashion magazines and blogs.

Eduardo Calvo

Calvo, who studied in Savannah, won the Grand Prize in Lifetime Television's first 'Project Runway Scholarship Challenge' in 2011. The Supima runway show wasn't his first 'appearance' in New York City. Calvo created 'candy couture,' a dress made completely out of sour belt candy that was displayed in the windows of Dylan's Candy Bar in New York City in 2010.

Natalia Yepes

Yepes, who studied in Atlanta, has received numerous awards for her design, including the SCAD Style Lab Mentorship in 2011 and 2012, the SCAD Etoile Award in May of 2012 and the 2012 SCAD Seen In Award.

Supima Design Competition history

Started in 2008, the annual Supima Design Competition was created to give runway exposure to emerging talent and was modeled on the legendary 1954 Wool Secretariat competition that launched the careers of the then-teenaged Yves St. Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

Since its start, former Supima Design Competition winners have gone on to launch their own labels, show at New York Fashion Week, and win jobs with top international labels.
