HONG KONG - SCAD, the university for creative careers, presents "
Year of the Rabbit," a juried exhibition featuring works in a variety of media - including painting, illustration, photography, sculpture, printmaking, animation and Web design - by SCAD students, professors and alumni. Selected works showcase a range of styles and interpretations of the theme "Year of the Rabbit," which is traditionally believed to be a time of peace, tranquility and relaxation as well as comfort, indulgence and fun.
The exhibition is free and open to the public now through March 25. It is showing concurrently at both SCAD Gallery, 2/F, 30-32 Wyndham St., Central, and Moot Gallery, 292 Tai Po Road, Sham Shui Po.
Works by more than 30 artists range from abstractions and formal investigations of the rabbit's form in graphic paintings to sculptural models and digital media works.
Viewers can engage with the animation of a "Rabbit's World" by Hung-Ning Liao (M.A., animation, 2010), which also showcases the making of the piece, and a Web design initially created in a Hong Kong eLearning class by Dixon Lo. This presentation bridges the experimentation in two dimensions.
Work by SCAD sculpture professor Andrew Scott and the [FAB LAB]_SCAD: The Digital Fabrication Club explores the applications of laser cutters, fused deposition modeling (FDM), CNC milling and software programs to generate physical objects in three dimensions relevant to a variety of majors and interests.
SCAD Savannah M.F.A. fibers student Kristie Duncan created a wall sculpture that whimsically illustrates animals and their interactions mimicking the social behavior of humans. The pieces also are influenced by folklore, fairytales and mythology.
International artist and SCAD painting professor Denise Carson's work creates a link between
SCAD Savannah and
SCAD Hong Kong by relating several symbols, including that of the bulldog (a beloved symbol of Georgia), to the Chinese lunar calendar within a recreated scene from "Song of the South." Carson's depiction shows two classic creatures, Br'er Brabbit (the bulldog wearing rabbit ears, thus "Brabbit") and the White Rabbit in a tranquil briar patch under the guidance of the man in the moon.
The playfulness of this exhibition is apparent and exemplified in works by Chair of Furniture Design Antonio Larosa, whose small table, like the rabbit, represents tranquility and relaxation, rest, comfort and fun. He humorously suggests an addendum to the title of the work should read "Puppy: After Chasing the Rabbit."
