HONG KONG - SCAD presents "
Oceana," an exhibition of new photographic works by SCAD alumna Lisa M. Robinson (M.F.A., photography, 1999), on view at Moot Gallery at SCAD Hong Kong, 292 Tai Po Road, Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. The exhibition takes place Sept. 8-Nov. 25. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15, 7-9 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
Growing up on the coast and now living in the desert, Robinson developed a deep-seated desire to express the ocean's influence on her work. The "Oceana" exhibition at Moot Gallery is the first time this new series has been exhibited outside of the United States.
In the tradition of the landscape genre, Robinson's "Oceana" images reveal stunning vistas and details of the ocean. Foaming peaks remind viewers of snowcapped mountains; swirling waters evoke the colors and changes in light across vast valleys; and undulating shorelines recall winding rivers that intersect the land. The ocean's strong visual references hold a strong affinity to the composition of landscape, offering through photography a painterly quality to the scenes.
Robinson's work also captures moments where the ebb and flow of the ocean no longer read as still images, but rather convey a sense of timeless motion and methodical movement. Poetically depicting the transformative nature of water, Robinson captures storm surges and calm reflective moments as well as the formation of ice and flowing currents. Together, these images dramatically describe the shape and movement of water, which comprises two-thirds of our world's surface.
