SCAD students present themed installations in collaboration with Hocusadabra.

HONG KONG - SCAD, the university for creative careers, supports the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design as an education partner in organizing one of the most exciting and diverse design events in Hong Kong, "DETOUR 2011," which runs from now through Dec. 11 at the former police married quarters on Hollywood Rd., Central.

Themed around "Use-Less," DETOUR 2011 lined up creative designs and concepts through exhibitions, installations, workshops, performances, conferences and forums, reflecting on the impacts of consumerism, thus to stimulate conversation and inspire eco-living.

Partnering with Hocusadabra, an online marketplace offering creatively and consciously-curated children's products, SCAD Hong Kong students created themed installations for DETOUR 2011 featuring Hocusadabra's Makedo - a system that connects found objects such as cardboard boxes or old takeaway cups to form new objects or structures. In light of this theme, SCAD Hong Kong students believe that one can conscientiously "use less" and practice "Makedo" in today's consumer-driven world. The artist's medium of "found objects" takes on a whole new meaning in these whimsical installations presented jointly by SCAD and Hocusadabra.

SCAD is dedicated to providing an active learning environment that is engaging and collaborative. Through collaborative learning projects with nonprofits, businesses and corporations, SCAD students and alumni gain hands-on experience outside of the classroom with real-world projects that result in tangible outcomes. These projects benefit SCAD's partners by providing fresh design insight and creative new thinking. In addition to the Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design, SCAD Hong Kong has partnered with a number of local organizations for collaborative learning partnerships or community events, including Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre, Hong Kong Design Centre, G.O.D. and MaD: Make a Difference, among others.
