ATLANTA - The Savannah College of Art and Design, a private, nonprofit, accredited, degree-granting university, is excited to host its annual Generate competition, a 24-hour art and design challenge ranging from
illustration and
sequential art to
animation and
television producing. Now in its sixth year, students representing several academic majors and artistic disciplines work together or individually to accomplish a seemingly insurmountable task in a short period of time. The 24-hour art and design challenge takes place at SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St., Sept. 30 - Oct. 1, 10 a.m. to 10 a.m.
"Generate is getting bigger every year due to many of the Atlanta businesses wanting to be involved with this unique challenge," said Pat Quinn, associate dean for the
School of Communication Arts. "Not only is this a great opportunity to showcase the university's talented students to the local community, but also this competition continues to be a great learning experience for them."
Some of this year's challenges will include creating a 24-page black and white comic book and designing the promotional poster for the 2012 Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon. School of Film and Digital Media students will participate in group challenges working with industry partners such as Turner Broadcasting Systems and Side Effects Software to create a playable video game and produce a documentary of the event. Illustration students will create a "Battle and Brew" poster based on this year's theme, science fiction as well as designs for Little PINK Book showcasing woman as powerful and feminine.
Each participating academic major presents different challenges, some of which have been created to match the initiatives and needs of the corporate sponsors. Representatives from These companies will judge the student work based on a brief provided to the students at the beginning of the competition. Students are free to work alone, collaborate with other students or work outside of their major areas of study. Non-participating students and faculty are encouraged to be on hand to observe the event and support the competitors.
This year Generate has more than 15 sponsors including Adobe, Café Nineteen, Oni Press, Turner Studios and Wacom.
