SCAD illustration grad student wins National Color Collection Competition

SAVANNAH, Georgia - Gautam Dutta, currently a SCAD illustration graduate student in Savannah, has won the National Color Collection Competition for his outstanding t-shirt design. The winner was announced yesterday at a ceremony in New York City.

Entrants were challenged to design a t-shirt inspired by vitaminwater zero. Gautam's winning design will now be sold on fashionvault.ebay.com. He also received a $5,000 grant and a trip to Los Angeles, where he will attend "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." Ellen is a spokesperson for vitaminwater zero.

"I am on cloud nine," said Gautam. "This is an amazing opportunity to help achieve my professional dreams. I am so proud to be representing SCAD and so grateful to my professors for providing me an amazing foundation to fine tune my talent."

Gautam was chosen as one of ten finalists by vitaminwater style council members, among them Eric Daman, costume designer for "Gossip Girl," Andrea Linett, creative director of eBay fashion, Joe Zee, creative director at ELLE magazine, and designers Chris Benz and Richard Chai, who sorted through entries from aspiring artists across the country to find the most remarkable vitaminwater zero-inspired designs. The ten finalists then had their designs posted on vitaminwater's Facebook page, where fans voted for their favorite to help select the winner.

"The work Gautam has been creating during his graduate illustration studies at SCAD is breathtaking," said Allan Drummond, Chair of SCAD's illustration department. "He is a consummate artist, a wonderful designer, and an amazing colorist. We will certainly be seeing more of him in the future."

Craig Stevens receives educator prize
SCAD professor Craig Stevens, a photographer, printmaker and educator, has received the inaugural $5,000 Susan Carr Educator Prize from the American Society of Media Photographers. Stevens has taught photography at SCAD for 25 years.
C&R Press publishes Chris Bundy book
"Baby You're a Rich Man," a book by writing professor Chris Bundy, has been published by C&R Press. The book, illustrated by SCAD alumnus Max Currie (B.F.A., sequential art, 2012), follows the story of Ken Richman, a down-on-his-luck, B-level variety star on Japanese television who is forced to go into hiding when he becomes the target of an escaped prisoner. "Baby You're a Rich Man" will be released in May.
Absher was named Liz Claiborne Design Scholar
B.F.A. fashion student Katherine Absher was named the 2013 Liz Claiborne Design Scholar by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The prestigious $25,000 award is presented each year to the student who best addresses through fashion the lifestyle and needs of women, as judged by a panel of fashion industry experts.
Builteman, Bowerman chair contest finalists
M.A. furniture design student Laney Builteman (B.F.A., interior design, 2009) and M.F.A. industrial design student Jamie Bowerman (B.F.A., graphic design, 2004; M.A., industrial design, 2012) are finalists in the Battery Park Conservancy's "Build a Chair: America's Design Competition." The top 50 designs, including Builteman's and Bowerman's design, "Chair for Battery Park," were selected by a world-renowned jury from more than 1,500 designers from 15 countries across the Americas. The winner will be announced in November; voting for the competition is open until October. The winning design will be installed in Battery Park in New York City.
