SAVANNAH, Ga.–The Savannah College of Art and Design School of Communication Arts is sponsoring a unique weekend-long symposium bringing together two of the most celebrated comic book artists in the country. The event, titled “Storytellers Weekend,” will run Friday, Feb. 19-Saturday, Feb. 20, at Arnold Hall, 1810 Bull St. at 35th Street, Savannah.
“Storytellers Weekend” will begin on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., with sessions led by Howard Chaykin, who has been called one of the best authors of science-fiction graphic novels, and Klaus Janson, who revolutionized the rarified art form of comic inking. These sessions will focus on the theory and mechanics of comics storytelling and are open to SCAD students.
About the artists
Howard Chaykin worked as a freelance artist for both Marvel and DC Comics. He worked for Heavy Metal magazine, proving to be a strong science-fiction author. This led to illustration duties on the comics adaption of the first Star Wars movie for Marvel. He created "American Flagg!" for First Comics, the series he is best known for, and created covers for three comics in DC's "Star Trek" line in the mid-1980s.
Klaus Janson has written both "The DC Comics Guide to Pencilling Comics" and "The DC Comics Guide to Inking Comics." He is probably most famous for his work on "Daredevil" and on DC’s Batman story "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns." His work as an inker and occasional penciller at Marvel Comics includes work on "Wolverine," "Amazing Spider-Man" and "Black Panther."
