SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design’s School of Liberal Arts presents a talk by Stanley Fish at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the Arnold Hall Auditorium, 1810 Bull St. Fish, prolific author and one of America’s leading intellectuals, will give a lecture titled “How to Write a Sentence.” The event is free and open to the public.
Stanley Fish is a critically acclaimed author, writer and well-known literary theorist who often contributes to the New York Times online blog, Opinionator. He is also the Davidson-Kahn Distinguished University Professor of Humanities and Law at Florida International University, in Miami, and dean emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins and Duke University. He is the author of 11 books, most recently “Save the World On Your Own Time,” on higher education. “The Fugitive in Flight,” a study of the 1960s TV drama, will be published in 2010.
Fish’s lecture is presented by SCAD’s School of Liberal Arts and its writing program. The writing program at SCAD offers instruction in a wide spectrum of nonfiction writing, including creative nonfiction, magazine, journalism, new media writing, writing for business and writing for nonprofits. The program focuses on preparing writers for professional careers in a broad range of fields. Students gain internships with magazines, newspapers and publishing houses, enabling them to assemble portfolios of clippings so crucial to career building.
