Hong Kong celebrities, artists and designers celebrate SCAD Gallery opening at gala event

HONG KONG—SCAD, the most comprehensive art and design university in the world, unveiled its new exhibition space SCAD Gallery March 11 with a gala reception at the gallery, 2F, 30‐32 Wyndham Street, in Central’s elite art district.

SCAD President Paula Wallace hosted the event, welcoming many of Hong Kong’s most noted celebrities, art connoisseurs, designers, government officials and other supportive friends. Attendees included Mrs. Carrie Lam, secretary for development, Hong Kong S.A.R.; Mr. Edmund T.Y. Lee, Executive Director of HK Design Centre; Ms. SooWei Shaw, Executive Director of HKIFF; Mrs. Reina Chau, owner of Sincere Watch Ltd; Mrs. Yvette Yuen, chairman of the Hong Kong Cancer Fund; Mrs. Lumen Kinoshita, investment banker; Ms. Winnie Yu, director of Commercial Radio Hong Kong; Mr. George Ho, owner of Hong Kong Commercial Radio; Mr. Lawrence Ho, owner of Propaganda; Mr. Alan Lo, owner of Press Room; Ms. Yenn Wong, owner of Jia Hotel; Ms. Sabrina Ho, daughter of Dr. Stanley Ho; Mr. Harris Chan, creative director of Moiselle Fashion; Mr. Benjamin Lau and Mr. Douglas Young, Owners of G.O.D; Mr. and Mrs. Gerd and Cecilina Glaser; Ms. Charlotte Chen, investment banker; Ms. Ingrid Chen; Mr. Mark Ryan; Mr. Simon Birch, the well known Hong Kong illustrator; and Mr. Dickson Yewn, owner of Life of Circle, to name just a few.

More than 330 guests attended the gala opening to welcome SCAD Gallery to Hong Kong’s international art community. The event was supported in part by ABSOLUT VODKA and G.H. Mumm.

Elizabeth Rowan, SCAD Hong Kong’s executive director for external relations, said, “SCAD is thrilled to debut this gallery space in Hong Kong as an arts resource for the community and a creative space to further the global dialogue surrounding both rising and established contemporary artists. We are most grateful to Hong Kong’s friends of the arts who attended the opening in support of SCAD’s arrival to Hong Kong, and look forward to contributing to the already vibrant creative atmosphere of this international city.”

SCAD Gallery premiered its first exhibition, "Generation SCAD," at the event. The exhibition features a sampling of the very best work by SCAD students, professors and alumni from around the world. A range of media is on display, including site‐specific installations, motion graphics, animation, painting, printmaking, photography and illustration. The exhibition runs March 15‐May 31 and is free and open to the public.

With the opening of SCAD Gallery, the university now operates 12 galleries in the United States, France and Hong Kong, with an annual exhibitions calendar featuring a range of work by talented SCAD students, professors, alumni and renowned visiting artists. Over the past decade, SCAD galleries have hosted exhibitions featuring work by such internationally renowned artists as Andy Warhol; Christo and Jean‐Claude; Kader Attia; Cao Fei + Map Office; and Karim Rashid.

SCAD will bring its exceptional academic programs and career preparation to Hong Kong in September with the opening of SCAD Hong Kong. Courses of study are registered with the Hong Kong Bureau of Education and include advertising, animation, graphic design, illustration, interactive design and game development, motion media design, photography, and visual effects. The university will offer bachelor's and master's degrees, pending U.S. approval by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
