Published: Jan 28, 2010

HONG KONG—SCAD, the university for creative careers, presents John Paul Rowan, vice president for SCAD Hong Kong, as a speaker at this year’s Hong Kong Trade Development Council Education and Careers Expo, to be held Feb. 4-7 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. SCAD is scheduled to open its Hong Kong location in Fall 2010, making it the first university in Hong Kong to focus exclusively on art and design.

Rowan will participate in the panel discussion “Sparking Creativity in Hong Kong” to discuss SCAD's vision for its Hong Kong location and how it can help students pursue professional careers in thriving creative industries. The panel will take place Feb. 5, 2:30-5 p.m. in Seminar Room 2, Hall 1E at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“The creative industry is set to become a pillar industry for Hong Kong and the region’s economic development, and a surge in creative careers is expected,” said Rowan. “SCAD courses of study are designed to help students put their creative passion to work to build fulfilling, professional careers in the creative industry of their choice.”

A first for the expo, an important focus of this year’s event is creative education, in line with Hong Kong’s dedication to developing its creative industry. HKTDC will feature a Culture and Creative Education Zone aimed to present a wide range of educational and training options as well as career development prospects in Hong Kong’s cultural and creative sectors.

SCAD will be a leading exhibitor of the Culture and Creative Education Zone, showcasing an extensive portfolio of digital media student work from the university’s locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Admission staff will be on site to introduce SCAD course offerings and answer questions from prospective students.

“Hong Kong continues to prove itself and advance its position as a leading creative market,” said Rowan. “We are excited to bring SCAD’s renowned digital media programs to Hong Kong in Fall 2010 to contribute to this advancement.”

SCAD is currently accepting applications for admission. Courses of study at SCAD Hong Kong focus on digital media and are registered with the Hong Kong Education Bureau. They include advertising, animation, graphic design, illustration, interactive design and game development, motion media design, photography, and visual effects, pending U.S. approval by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Applications to SCAD Hong Kong and the other SCAD locations in Savannah or Atlanta, Georgia, are available online.

The HKTDC Education and Careers Expo is free and open to the public at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Attendees can learn more about SCAD at booth 1DA02.
