ATLANTA—The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) announced today that Sarah Butler is the winner of the fourth annual ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon Poster Design Contest. Butler, a double major in graphic design and fashion from Atlanta, Ga., took first-place honors in the contest and received a $1,500 scholarship toward her tuition at SCAD. The winning poster became the official running poster of the ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon, which takes place March 21.

“I wanted to play off how the ING Marathon was relative to Georgia, so I incorporated the footprint of a running shoe and a peach into my design,” said Butler. “When they announced my name, I couldn’t believe it.”

The goal of the competition was to create a piece of art in 13 hours and 1 minute (coinciding with the 13.1-mile distance of the half marathon) that is unique to Georgia; incorporates the passion, health and fitness of running; and illustrates the excitement of the event. Fifty-five teams of students currently enrolled in the graphic design program at SCAD’s Atlanta location participated in the contest from 9-10:01 p.m., October 2, 2009. Twenty-eight teams completed the contest in the time allotted; and six finalists were chosen for the final judging on March 9, 2010.

“Events like these are a great example of how the ING Georgia Marathon can give back to the Atlanta community,” said Jeff Graves, race director of the ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon. “Sarah’s design is great, and I am excited to have it represent this year’s race.”

The ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon take place Sunday, March 21, 7 a.m. The racecourse travels through metro Atlanta’s most interesting and historic areas, including the Sweet Auburn District, Inman Park, Decatur, Druid Hills, Virginia-Highland and the midtown areas. Along the way, the runners will pass many of the city’s historic landmarks, including the King Historic Site, Carter Center, four college campuses and Piedmont Park. Race weekend also includes the Publix Run Wild 5K and Kids Fun Run, both of which are scheduled to take place Saturday, March 20.

Participants can sign up for the ING marathons online at www.inggeorgiamarathon.com or mail registration forms to US Road Sports & Entertainment of Georgia LLC, 528 Plasters Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30324.
