ATLANTA—The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Through the Woods,” a solo exhibition by California-based artist Clare Rojas. The exhibition traverses five years of the artist’s production. A careful blend of comedy and tragedy, past and present, Rojas’ imaginative landscapes are peopled with stylized human and animal characters playing out poignant and witty allegorical narratives.
“Through the Woods” showcases Rojas’ distinct iconography that references imagery ranging from Pennsylvania Dutch Hex signs to Russian nesting dolls and American comic books. Inspired by folk art, street art, quilting and cartoons, her work evocatively connects themes of history, community, feminism, ecology and individuality in an unforgettable folklore entirely contemporary and unique.
SCAD senior curator Melissa Messina said, “‘Through the Woods’ is an exhibition combining Rojas’ work of the past five years, highlighting her stylistic refinement, ever-growing breadth of subject matter, and imagery. It marks her achievements as an emerging female artist to serve as inspiration to SCAD students.”
Rojas has had solo exhibitions at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, León, Spain; the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass.; San Francisco Art Institute, Calif.; and the Knoxville Museum of Art, Tenn. She has participated in Prospect.1 New Orleans in 2008, as well as the traveling exhibition “Beautiful Losers” at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, in 2004.
“Through the Woods” will be on view at the ACA Gallery of SCAD in Atlanta, Feb. 19-April 2. Selected works from this exhibition will then travel to SCAD’s Pinnacle Gallery in Savannah from April 9-May 9.
