ATLANTA—The Savannah College of Art and Design continues its community education program with the winter 2010 series of workshops, Feb. 10-March 6 in Atlanta. Open to adults and teens 15 years and up, the workshops give those interested in tapping into their creative spirit access to SCAD’s outstanding facilities and instructors.
Registration for the winter series of workshops is now open to learners at all levels, and most do not require prior experience. Costs range from $75 to $225, depending on materials (with all materials provided at the workshop). Class sizes are small to provide more individual attention. Early registration is encouraged.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of design concepts and methods using Adobe CS3 software and other industry-standard design-based Mac programs. Anyone registering for this course should have a fundamental knowledge of basic computer software programs, especially those that are Adobe-based. Session II registration is open only to those who have completed Session I.
Silver Jewelry Intensive

Create your own wearable, sterling silver art during your first day in the studio. This course emphasizes basic metal fabrication techniques, including soldering, sawing, forming, filing and polishing, along with well-balanced design. Previous experience is not necessary, although even intermediate students benefit from this open-format class. No experience necessary. A supply list will be provided upon registration with some supplies available for purchase at the first class.

This course introduces students to garment construction in fashion design through a process called draping. The art of draping, as popularized by “Project Runway,” allows fashion designers to make their designs real and tangible. At the culmination of the class, students will create a simple dress shirt, blouse or skirt of their own design. This is the ideal introductory class for further garment construction. On the first day, students should bring a sleeveless and collarless hand-drawn dress/shirt/blouse/skirt design, in addition to scissors, pins and five yards of muslin fabric.

Creative Book-making Workshop

This workshop explores artists’ books as an art form. An extensive investigation of book content and construction, including the use of letterforms and illustrations, are key elements. Initial instruction in a variety of simple foundational structures, such as pamphlet and accordion stylebooks, allows for further development with other media and materials—photography, printmaking and painting—in the creation of individual artists’ books. Papermaking in the Classroom with No Budget

During this three-day workshop, learn how to use papermaking as a gateway to a myriad of subject matters, including fine arts, language arts, science, math, history and social studies. Learn to build your own equipment for use in the classroom, create pulp, manage large quantities of wet paper/pulp, create paper clay sculptures and practice follow-up possibilities, including storytelling, creative writing, bookbinding, printmaking, sculpture, nature study/botany, history and environmental issues.
Flash Web site Design Workshop

Learn the basic rules of Web design and how to create a simple site in Flash by creating and uploading a basic site. Cold Silver Fabrication Workshop

Don’t have an acetylene torch at home? No problem. In this six-hour workshop, learn to fabricate a pair of sterling silver earrings with forged French ear wires from sheet silver with no use of a torch. Learn basic fabrication skills, including sawing, forging, dapping, forming, filing and polishing. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be wearing your own beautiful creation! This class is designed to broaden the skills of those students with some jewelry-making experience, but it’s also a great introduction of basic fabrication skills for the student who is just beginning.
Don't Be Sheepish... Accessorize! Workshop
