SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design has been awarded the 2009 Sloan Consortium Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Teaching and Learning Programming. The Sloan Consortium Awards recognize institutions that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and success in advancing online education.
The 2009 Sloan-C Excellence in Online Teaching and Learning Awards Selection Committee consisted of a distinguished group of academic leaders, most of whom have previously won Sloan-C awards. As a 2009 award recipient,
SCAD eLearning was recognized for “outstanding achievement in the development and delivery of exemplary online programs in art and design education with unmatched dedication to student learning.” Darrell Naylor-Johnson, vice president for SCAD eLearning, and Mona Meyer, SCAD eLearning director of instructional design, will accept the award at Sloan-C’s 15th annual international conference in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 29.
Burks Oakley, chair of the Awards Selection Committee, cited SCAD’s exemplary achievement and ability to “provide access to an unmatched arts education and career preparatory experience by maintaining a high level of dedication to student learning and instructional effectiveness in a manner that is cost-effective for all stakeholders of the institution.”
“SCAD eLearning was developed and implemented with a focus on best practices, a sincere commitment to providing students with an exceptional education, and dedication to institutional core values and the SCAD mission,” said Naylor-Johnson. “While SCAD eLearning has won numerous awards and accolades for distance education, online teaching, course development and program structure, the Sloan-C award is significant in that it recognizes the efforts of the SCAD eLearning team and celebrates our institution-wide commitment to online education.
He explained, “Departments throughout the university provide a comprehensive range of services, support and resources for online students. In particular, the admission department, student counseling and support services, the SCAD Writing Center, the financial aid office, the ombudsman’s office, and of course our faculty have worked diligently with the SCAD eLearning team over the years to ensure that online students receive an educational experience reflective of the depth and breadth of SCAD.”
