SAVANNAH, Ga. - The
SCADDY Awards, the only college-sponsored event of its type in the nation, were presented Jan. 24 by the Savannah College of Art and Design at the Trustees Theater. The ceremony honored excellence in SCAD student advertising in 16 categories. More than 1,800 entries across 10 different majors were received and judged by select faculty and industry professionals, including best-selling author and copywriter Luke Sullivan. The event included an exhibition of finalists' work, a networking night, a lecture by advertising guru Charles Hall, and an after-party at Tantra Lounge.
A Special Judges Award for Copywriting, picked by best-selling author and copywriter Luke Sullivan, was presented to graduate advertising design student Rebecca Cullers for her project "Huey." Cullers, of Charlottesville, Va., also won two Gold awards for her magazine ad campaign and advertising copywriting and a Silver award for her advertising copywriting work on a Nike project. Undergraduate broadcast design and motion graphics student Michael Luckhardt of Rotunda West, Fla., took home a Gold award for his graphics project "Anger Management." Undergraduate film and television students Colin Levy of Lutherville, Md., and Rogue Smith-Nonini of Durham, N.C., won a Gold award and Best of Show for their Coca-Cola TV commercial "The Disappearing Act." A complete list of winners is available upon request.
Winning work will go on to compete as entries in the ADDY Awards, the advertising industry's largest creative competition. SCAD alumnus Damon Carlson (B.F.A., illustration, 2008), winner of two 2008 national ADDY Awards, was a presenter at this year's SCADDY Awards ceremony.
The SCADDY Awards are hosted annually to help prepare SCAD students for careers in the advertising industry. The competition encourages collaboration and cooperation between majors while rewarding creative excellence. Recruiters often scout the event for fresh talent. In 2008 Joe Gilman of Erwin-Penland attended the event to recruit students prior to the SCAD Career Fair.
