SAVANNAH, Ga.–The Savannah College of Art and Design and Jittery Joe's Coffee announce the release of a unique, university-specific blend of coffee with product packaging that features the artwork of SCAD sequential art student Andy J. Hirsch. The Slam-N-Study Blend, a certified organic blend, is being sold at the Jittery Joe's location at SCAD’s Ex Libris bookstore, 228 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. SCAD and Jittery Joe’s are sharing proceeds from the sale of the blend.

Jittery Joe's and SCAD collaborated to enlist several of the university’s communication arts students in developing the packaging concept. The final illustration and label design was created Hirsch.

"Working with Jittery Joe's to develop Slam-N-Study, SCAD students experienced working for a real company with a chance to see their work ‘on the shelves’ in a retail environment,” said John Lowe, dean of the SCAD School of Communication Arts. “It was a perfect match – our students’ creative abilities combined with a successful, creative company.”

Michael Ripps, president of Jittery Joe's Coffee, said, "The Jittery Joe's brand has always been identified as one that is fun, creative and somewhat unique. We thought this project would be a great opportunity to get SCAD students involved in the creative process – to bring their work out of the classroom and into the real world. It was also another chance for us to connect with students in addition to our location at Ex Libris."

Hirsch is a senior sequential art student set to graduate from SCAD in Fall 2009. He is currently working on an unannounced miniseries for Slave Labor Graphics, the first issue of which is due out in mid-2010.

Jittery Joe’s
Jittery Joe’s Coffee opened its first location in 1994 next to the world-famous 40 Watt Club in downtown Athens, Ga. The superior micro-roasted coffee and the downtown scene enabled Jittery Joe’s to grow to various locations in the state of Georgia, including university campuses such as SCAD, University of Georgia, Mercer University and Kennesaw State University. They recently opened their first location in New York City and will open a new location in Dallas before the end of the year. Jittery Joe's also provides coffee to restaurants, bistros, bike shops, grocery and specialty food stores, nonprofits, and hotel and hospitality accounts across the United States.

The Jittery Joe’s Coffee philosophy is to create a balanced, specialized roast for each varietal and blend with roasts that highlight the distinctive natural characteristics of the coffees. To meet that goal, Jittery Joe’s selects and roasts only the top 1 percent of beans from more than 18 countries and then micro-roasts each batch to ensure quality.
