ATLANTA - Public art is essential to a thriving city. In an effort to raise awareness and literally elevate the arts, a bronze sculpture measuring 14 feet tall by 10 feet wide created by renowned American sculptor Jedd Novatt will find a permanent home on the front lawn of SCAD's Atlanta location Thursday, Oct. 8. The dedication ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. and is by invitation only.
The sculpture was donated to SCAD by avid art collector Mary Spencer in honor of her late husband, Sash Spencer. In 2008, Mary Spencer commissioned Novatt to create the monumental sculpture "Chaos Mundaka" (the first in an edition of three) honoring her husband, who was a committed patron of the arts. Over the years, the Spencers established relationships with artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol and Novatt. The sculpture is part of Novatt's highly acclaimed "Chaos" series that has been featured at leading museums and galleries in France, Great Britain and Spain.
"SCAD is pleased to receive this monumental sculpture by talented artist Jedd Novatt," said Barry M. Buxton, vice president for special projects at SCAD. "We are grateful to Mary Spencer, a true patron of the arts, for her desire to honor her late husband, Sash Spencer, with this donation to SCAD. The Novatt sculpture will serve as a source of inspiration to our students and will enhance the cultural and artistic diversity of Atlanta."
"Chaos Mundaka" (Mundaka is a village in Spain) is part of Novatt's "Chaos" series of bronze sculptures he creates in his studio at a foundry near Bilbao, Spain. "Chaos Vascos," the first in an edition of three, was part of a solo exhibition at La Piscine Musée d'Art et d'Industrie de Roubaix in France, where it remains on permanent display at the museum entrance. "Chaos Vascos," the second in the edition, was selected for
Sotheby's prestigious "Beyond
Limits 2008" exhibition at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, England, and the second in the edition of "Chaos Mundaka" is in the "Beyond Limits 2009" exhibition.
Crated in Spain, the sculpture is traveling by boat to Charleston and then will travel via truck to Atlanta. "Chaos Mundaka" will enhance the midtown Atlanta cityscape while educating SCAD students and visitors for many years to come.
"We designed and created SCAD-Atlanta to be a star in the city's crown, and this work of art, shared with the public, will add its own special brilliance to the campus," said SCAD President Paula S. Wallace.
