SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Savannah College of Art and Design continues its community education program with the spring 2009 series of workshops, March 28-May 16 in Savannah. Open to adults and teens 15 years and up, the workshops give those interested in tapping into their creative spirit access to SCAD's outstanding facilities and instructors.
Registration for the spring series of workshops is now open to learners at all levels, and most do not require prior experience. Costs range from $55 to $145 depending on materials, with all materials provided at the workshop. Class sizes are small to provide more individual attention. Early registration is encouraged.

Spring 2009 Workshops
Advanced Reconstructed Couture
Saturday, April 18, 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Registration fee: $75
Instructor: Ashley Newsome
Participants will learn about trend cycles in fashion and the translation of old silhouettes into new ones. There will be some workshop-supplied garments and sewing materials available, but please bring your own sewing machine, needles, extra thread and any clothing you have tucked away just waiting for an amazing transformation. Basic sewing knowledge required.
Beach Bling

Found items such as shells from a walk on the beach can be used to create one-of-kind pieces that are not only beautiful to wear, but can bring back memories of sun and surf. Beads, shells, buttons and vintage components will be used to create a piece of jewelry that is evocative of a walk on the beaches of Tybee Island. Basic jewelry making techniques will be explored as well as combinations of texture, color and shape. No experience necessary. All supplies included, though participants are welcome to bring their own beach inspirations.
The Beaded Necklace

Create multi-strand necklaces that can be worn together or separately to create a stunning layered look. Use beads, buttons, vintage pieces and found items to build cohesive beaded strands that complement each other. Explore color, texture, size and spatial relations. Though all workshop supplies are provided, participants are invited to bring favorite beads to be incorporated into the piece. No experience required.
The C.F. Payne Method-Mixed Media

Started by illustrator C.F. Payne, this technique combines oil, watercolor, acrylic and colored pencil in steps, with each step separated by the spray fixative Sureguard. The process allows for tight control of imagery and utilizes the varieties of effects each media can provide. Participants are welcome to bring a photo of a family member, celebrity, animal, landscape or anything else they would like to paint. All supplies provided.
Comic Book Basics

Figure it Out: Drawing the Human Figure

Found Object Sculpture

Can you recognize the potential in antique, thrift or found objects? Do you have the desire to revamp or redo? Then this workshop is perfect for you! Deconstruct common everyday found objects from thrift stores to create beautiful new sculptures. No experience required; only an interest in reconstructing reusable art and building beautiful new objects. Boxes of found objects and some building materials will be provided but please bring anything you are interested in working with from your own collection of found objects.
Freeform Wearable Art with Wire

Create unique pieces of jewelry by combining wire metal work with basic beading techniques. Participants will be introduced to basic metal hammering and bending to create freeform wire metal links and chains encrusted with beads, buttons and found items. Though all workshop supplies are provided, participants are invited to bring favorite beads, vintage items, etc. to be incorporated into the piece.
Fugitive Ink Painting

This workshop is perfect for journal keepers, sketchbook artists and future illustrators. This mixed media process incorporates the fugitive qualities of inks with acrylic paints. Glassblowing

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn and practice the intricate art of glassblowing. This workshop will introduce the absolute beginner to the basics of working hot glass. During this one day session students will learn to gather glass from the furnace then use the blocks, marver and other tools first to make solid forms such as marbles and paperweights and then finish by blowing glass to make simple bowls and vases. No experience required. All workshop materials and supplies are included in the registration fee. Wearing cotton jeans, cotton long sleeve shirt and closed-toe shoes is recommended.
Gouache vs. Ink Workshop

This illustration workshop introduces two techniques using gouache and ink. Learn the step-by-step approaches to achieve a faux etching as well as an ink resist. The workshop includes detailed demonstrations on these unconventional painting methods and hands-on assistance. No prior painting experience required, however, some drawing experience helpful. "Green" Quilting

Calling all connoisseurs of comfort and resourceful recyclers! This two-day workshop is for experienced sewers and quilters who would like to push their traditional skills and redefine the boundaries formerly defined by quilting. Using all recycled materials, students will start one-of-a-kind, visually interesting and functional art quilts. There will be some workshop-supplied fabrics and sewing materials available, but please bring your own sewing machine, needles, extra thread and any fabrics you have tucked away just waiting for an amazing project to come along, because here it is!
Hats Off: Knitting in the Round

Expand your basic knitting knowledge by learning to knit in the round! In this workshop we will use circular and double pointed needles to make a baby hat that can easily be translated to a child or adult hat. Knitting for the Novice

Learn to knit like your cool Granny in this intro to knitting class! This workshop will cover the very basics of knitting such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, garter and stockinette stitch, as well as casting off to get you started on a fabulous scarf or pillow. All supplies are provided.
Linoleum Printmaking Basics

Learn to cut patterns and images into linoleum blocks to create simple, hand-printed images. This workshop will start by discussing design, materials and carving techniques for linoleum printing, then participants will work on a single block project using one color. Paper and ink choices will be discussed, as well as image selection, design and how to create a small edition of prints. No experience required. All supplies provided.
No Fear Watercolor

Dive in and overcome your fear of watercolors! In this workshop, participants will learn how to mix paints, make a wash, utilize drybrush technique, learn to lift paint, and tricks such as using salt, resist and more. Swim into even deeper water in this more advanced workshop where participants will learn how to work wet into wet, utilize interesting lighting effects, and get dazzling textures by working over gel medium. Painting the Figure in Acrylic Open Studio

Explore life painting at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Participants will be divided into groups by experience and will work on assignments or continue pursuing their individual directions. Some basic instruction on learning "to see" will be given to beginners, as necessary. Working with a live model, the workshop will focus on a grisaille or monotone under painting followed by a layering of color to complete a realistic finished work. All levels welcome. All supplies provided.
Paper Quilting

Using traditional quilt patterns, learn how to create quilts using scrap paper, magazines, books, paper bags, receipts, letters, certificates and other decorative papers. Construct six mini-quilts measuring 6" x 6"; perfect for framing or sending to someone you love. Piecing will be done by hand with some embroidered embellishment, as well as some work on the sewing machine. Though some workshop papers and embellishments will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own newspapers, song books, dictionaries, encyclopedias and other books/papers with interesting motifs and images. Pattern Drafting

Working from existing patterns this workshop will teach students how to transfer patterns from sewn garments to paper and will focus on the basic drafting and alteration of the flat patterns. Participants will gain an understanding of 2-D into 3-D design and will become familiar with basic garment shapes. Sewing experience required.

Shibori Sampler-Dying to Quilt

An ancient Japanese art, shibori's intricacy goes far beyond the usual tie-dye techniques. Basic shaped resist techniques-binding, pleating, knotting, stitching, clamping and pole-wrapping-are easy to learn and endlessly variable. Make nine sample squares that can later be turned to create a small wall quilt. Adaptable to any fabric-dye combination, the workshop uses Procion MX dyes on cotton and silk. Dyes, fabric and binding materials are provided.

Wool Rehab

This workshop will focus on the use and re-use of knitted wool by reconstructing wool sweaters into felted purses and deconstructing wool sweaters into reusable yarn for knitting and crochet. The ease of wool felting and the dye ability of wool fibers will be demonstrated. This workshop will also touch on the concept of reconstruction and deconstruction of ready-made garments. All supplies provided, though participants are welcome to bring old wool sweaters from home as well.
