Inspiration for teaching:
"Teaching is the most stimulating, rewarding activity possible. The ways that students engage with ideas and take established concepts and then do something new with them provides a continuous source of energy and inspiration. Teaching engaged students requires a constant questioning and rethinking of one's assumptions and opens up new ways of looking at and encountering our shared world."

Artist statement:
"I work from the position of artist-as-theorist/researcher. Taken as a whole, my work has three interlocking aspects: the theoretical, the experimental and the historical. The theoretical aspects of my work are informed by experimental or practical application of theoretical ideas, and the study of both contemporary and historical work. What unites this triad is an analytical approach to my medium: apparent motion. By taking as my medium 'apparent motion' instead of film, video, computer-based motion graphics, etc., the conception of any specific movie is not limited to only one physical medium or particular exhibition format. However, I am not interested in producing formalist work; I view the theoretical/historical approach as a vehicle to make work that is original and engages more than just formal issues."

Artist statement:
"I am an artist, designer and educator working primarily in time-based electronic media. My practice blurs the division between commercial and experimental categories and often reconfigures one polarity of art and commercial media against the other. I have designed film titles, motion graphics, music videos, magazine illustrations, museum exhibit designs, websites, forensic simulations, interactive kiosks, commercial exhibit designs, and 'spectacle' (entertainment) designs. I am a founding member of the Medeology Collective, a group of artists and theorists whose artwork is concerned with the cultural, political and technological influence of the mass media in the form of new media digital video performance in public, academic and gallery contexts."

Inspiration for teaching:
"I approach teaching motion design from a fine art perspective and place great emphasis on concept development, visual research and experimentation. I completed my doctorate on the History, Theory and Practice of Visual Arts under the supervision of Professor Francis Frascina and Jonathan Harris at the University of Keele in 2001. My Ph.D. was part of an innovative and new area of doctoral research in which the theory and practice of visual arts and media were given equal status and focus. I have continued to be personally committed to the development and understanding of art praxis (theory/practice) within art and design education."

Artist statement:
"I am a motion designer and media artist as well as a theorist/practitioner in the field of visual arts and new digital media. I am an active researcher, particularly in the area of live digital video performance. This includes performing live cinema regularly in real-time public installations. I consider live cinema to be a new art form that I have been committed to developing and exploring since its inception in the late 1990s. I am also intent on recoding the dualism between abstraction and figuration that takes the form of an exploration of abstraction and visual music as well as figurative montage."
