Visual Resources Center

The Visual Resources Center offers all current faculty, staff and students access to the SCAD Digital Image Database and the ARTstor Digital Library. The SCAD DID is a growing in-house collection of more than 100,000 images. The ARTstor Digital Library is a database of more than 1,000,000 art-related images, associated information, and software tools designed to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship. The department also maintains a circulating collection of more than 320,000 slides for faculty, staff and student use. Group instructional workshops in using the SCAD Digital Image Database and ARTstor are offered quarterly, and individual instructional sessions are also available. Contact the Visual Resources Center for a schedule of upcoming workshops, or to request individualized instruction.

Policies and procedures

Collections acquisitions policy

Images supporting classroom instruction, student presentations and research will be acquired as the acquisitions budget and department resources allow. The Visual Resources Center will scan images in books and from slides for inclusion in the SCAD Digital Image Database or purchase images from commercial vendors. Patrons are required to check the SCAD Digital Image Database for relevant material already available before making their request. Patrons must be aware of the following production timelines when submitting their request:

  • Projects of 1-50 images-two weeks
  • Projects of 50-100 images-one quarter (three months)
  • Projects of 100-150 images-two quarters (six months)
  • Projects larger than 250 images will not be accepted.

How to request images

Faculty image requests

Digital images may be requested by filling out a faculty image request form. Completed image request forms, and materials to be scanned should be given to a Visual Resources Center staff member. Faculty will be notified via e-mail when their requests have been completed and they should pick up their book(s). All fines for overdue books are the responsibility of the faculty member who checked out the book. Digital images will be available on the SCAD Digital Image Database.

SCAD Atlanta patrons should give their completed image request forms and materials to the Visual Resources librarian at the SCAD Atlanta library. Materials will then be sent to the VRC in Savannah for scanning and uploading. Patrons will be notified via e-mail when their image requests have been completed and materials are returned to the SCAD library in Atlanta.

SCAD Hong Kong patrons may submit their requests via fax (912.525.4721) or email. We can only accept scanning requests from Hong Kong patrons for materials that are available in the Jen Library collection. However, if you require particular images that are only part of the Hong Kong collection, contact the Visual Resources Center and we will work with you to seek alternative sources for these images.

Faculty requests for images from commercial image providers

The Visual Resources Center is happy to consider requests for purchasing images from commercial image providers. Scholars Resource allows faculty to create online wish lists for consideration for purchase. Please make sure to select "visible to others at my institution" under allow others to view, when creating your account. The director can then view the images requested and add them to the Visual Resources Center order. Please e-mail the Visual Resources Center when the request is needed. Allow at least four weeks for processing.

Student requests for images

Digital images may be requested by filling out a student image request form. Completed image request forms and materials should be submitted to a Visual Resources Center staff member. Library books should be renewed prior to submitting requests; any fines that accrue during processing are the responsibility of the student. All requests should be submitted three weeks in advance of the date needed for presentation. Students will be notified of completion via their SCAD email accounts. Digital images will be available on the SCAD Digital Image Database.

SCAD Atlanta students should give their completed image request forms and materials to be scanned to the Visual Resources librarian at the SCAD Atlanta library. Materials will then be sent to the VRC in Savannah for scanning and uploading. Students will be notified via e-mail when their image requests have been completed and materials are returned to the SCAD library in Atlanta.

SCAD Hong Kong students may submit their requests via fax (912.525.4721) or email. We can only accept scanning requests from Hong Kong patrons for materials that are available in the Jen Library collection.
