Interlibrary Loan Request-Articles Form
Interlibrary Loan Request-Books Form

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows SCAD to better serve the information/research needs of its patrons by providing access to materials held at non-SCAD institutions. All requests for ILL and Inter-SCAD loans are received at the Savannah location-Jen Library ILL office.
  • Interlibrary Loan (Materials not owned by SCAD Libraries):
Books, articles, and/or photocopies from journals, etc. that are not owned by SCAD Libraries can be requested through ILL.
  • Inter-SCAD Loans (Materials owned by SCAD Libraries):
For access to materials held at another SCAD library, use the inter-SCAD "request" feature on our catalog. Read instructions for making requests. This is for the Atlanta and Savannah locations only. Materials will not be mailed to or from Lacoste or Hong Kong.

Eligibility
Current students, faculty and staff may use the ILL service. Patrons must have a valid SCAD ID and no delinquent fines or library materials.
Cost
There is no charge for ILL unless the cost to obtain an item exceeds $20. If the lending institution's charges exceed $20, the patron will be contacted and given the option of paying the difference.
Materials unavailable through ILL
Materials not available via ILL include bestsellers, new books, materials with local restrictions (reference, reserve, etc.), rare or valuable materials, bulky or fragile items that are difficult to mail, whole issues of periodicals and unique materials that would be difficult or impossible to replace.
Plan ahead
The time it takes to obtain an item can vary considerably. It may take two to four weeks for requested items to arrive.
Loan period
The loan period for an ILL item is determined by the lending library. Unless restricted, one renewal may be requested no later than five days before the due date (no exceptions). Renewals are not guaranteed. The fine for overdue ILL materials is $5 per day, per item. Overdue ILL fines will not be waived for faculty or staff. The Jen Library reserves the right to withhold ILL service from any patron who abuses the ILL policy.

SCAD Hong Kong Library is working with local academic and public libraries in Hong Kong to provide students and faculty with materials not owned by SCAD Libraries.

Faculty and students may request periodical articles from a different SCAD location by using the request function in the library online catalog. Because of the distance between the Hong Kong location and other SCAD locations, we would not be able to request books in a timely manner. Faculty and students are encouraged to use the Collection Development Request Forms to suggest items to be added to the Hong Kong collection ahead of time.

The Artist Book Collection in Atlanta

Overview
Savannah College of Art Design's ACA Library in Atlanta owns a premier collection of more than 2,000 artists' books—works of art that experiment with the potential of the book. The genre includes immense diversity in shape, medium and content. SCAD's collection reflects this variety containing unique creations by individual artists and items from fine arts alike. Works from more than 1,000 artists active from the 1960s through the contemporary era are represented. SCAD's collection is unique in that it holds the largest collection of books printed by Nexus Press, a fine arts press that was once in Atlanta and a hub for artist's book production.
Philosophy
SCAD Libraries believe strongly in artists' books as a teaching resource. The library offers subject specific classes each quarter to a wide variety of majors. Students, faculty and the public can make appointments to visit the collection, interact with the books and, in doing so, to gain inspiration for their own creative projects.
Events and lectures
The library hosts an annual Artist's Book Symposium each spring, which includes lectures, presentations and workshops related to the study of book arts. In conjunction with the symposium, students have the opportunity to take part in the Student Artist's Book Competition and compete to win one of three purchase prizes and a spot in the permanent collection.

Overview
The Jen Library's Archives and Special Collections include a number of topical collections of rare and unique materials. The largest collection is the Don Bluth Collection of Animation, which contains the cels, drawings, storyboards and administrative papers of the studio and materials for feature productions and games, as well as concepts and ideas. Book collections include artists' books and art press books, pop-up books, local history materials, limited editions, and rare books on artists, architects and art movements. Manuscript collections include the published records of SCAD, the papers of Myrtle Jones, a local Savannah artist, collections of fashion materials, stereo views and postcards of Savannah, and of memorabilia from the old Hotel De Soto. The library also houses a large collection of comic books and limited edition or rare graphic novels. Departmental periodical titles include older issues of serials in the circulating collection, as well as titles that are housed only in Special Collections. The Access Services department houses current theses, but these are relocated to Special Collections after five years.
Philosophy
The Archives and Special Collections Department of the Savannah College of Art and Design maintains non-circulating collections of unique, valuable and significant original works in relevant areas of study housed in the Jen Library on the third floor. The department supports a wide range of research and teaching in the fine and applied arts. While the items acquired may vary greatly in format and topical interest, all materials in the collection are considered to have notable value to SCAD programs. The purpose of Special Collections is to preserve these materials within a secure environment where their availability to the SCAD community and to the general public can be ensured for current and future generations.

Policies and procedures

Collections acquisitions policy
Images supporting classroom instruction, student presentations and research will be acquired as the acquisitions budget and department resources allow. The Visual Resources Center will scan images in books and from slides for inclusion in the SCAD Digital Image Database or purchase images from commercial vendors. Patrons are required to check the SCAD Digital Image Database for relevant material already available before making their request. Patrons must be aware of the following production timelines when submitting their request:
  • Projects of 1-50 images-two weeks
  • Projects of 50-100 images-one quarter (three months)
  • Projects of 100-150 images-two quarters (six months)
  • Projects larger than 250 images will not be accepted.

How to request images

Faculty image requests
Digital images may be requested by filling out a faculty image request form. Completed image request forms, and materials to be scanned should be given to a Visual Resources Center staff member. Faculty will be notified via e-mail when their requests have been completed and they should pick up their book(s). All fines for overdue books are the responsibility of the faculty member who checked out the book. Digital images will be available on the SCAD Digital Image Database.

SCAD Atlanta patrons should give their completed image request forms and materials to the Visual Resources librarian at the SCAD Atlanta library. Materials will then be sent to the VRC in Savannah for scanning and uploading. Patrons will be notified via e-mail when their image requests have been completed and materials are returned to the SCAD library in Atlanta.

SCAD Hong Kong patrons may submit their requests via fax (912.525.4721) or e-mail. We can only accept scanning requests from Hong Kong patrons for materials that are available in the Jen Library collection. However, if you require particular images that are only part of the Hong Kong collection, contact the Visual Resources Center and we will work with you to seek alternative sources for these images.
Faculty requests for images from commercial image providers
The Visual Resources Center is happy to consider requests for purchasing images from commercial image providers. Scholars Resource allows faculty to create online wish lists for consideration for purchase. Please make sure to select "visible to others at my institution" under allow others to view, when creating your account. The director can then view the images requested and add them to the Visual Resources Center order. Please e-mail the Visual Resources Center when the request is needed. Allow at least four weeks for processing.
Student requests for images
Digital images may be requested by filling out a student image request form. Completed image request forms and materials should be submitted to a Visual Resources Center staff member. Library books should be renewed prior to submitting requests; any fines that accrue during processing are the responsibility of the student. All requests should be submitted three weeks in advance of the date needed for presentation. Students will be notified of completion via their SCAD e-mail accounts. Digital images will be available on the SCAD Digital Image Database.

SCAD Atlanta students should give their completed image request forms and materials to be scanned to the Visual Resources librarian at the SCAD Atlanta library. Materials will then be sent to the VRC in Savannah for scanning and uploading. Students will be notified via e-mail when their image requests have been completed and materials are returned to the SCAD library in Atlanta.

SCAD Hong Kong students may submit their requests via fax (912.525.4721) or e-mail. We can only accept scanning requests from Hong Kong patrons for materials that are available in the Jen Library collection.
