Information for Students

SCAD libraries strive to serve students by developing library collections, providing assistance with all class projects and research assignments, and by providing the most current and innovative information and research assistance by reaching out to students wherever they are.

Collection development requests: SCAD Libraries welcomes and encourages faculty and students to make requests for new books, DVDs, databases and periodicals. Suggest a single item by using the collection development request form. Contact a librarian to suggest multiple items or submit general requests. Items that are needed by faculty for an upcoming class are given highest priority, followed by newly published items that directly support the curriculum at SCAD. SCAD Libraries cannot guarantee the fulfillment of all requests. SCAD librarians are available to meet with faculty or students at any time to discuss ways to improve the library's collection.

A valid SCAD ID is needed to check out materials.

Circulation periods are as follows:
  • Undergraduates may check out up to 10 circulating books for two-week periods.
  • Graduate students may check out up to 30 books at a time.
  • Faculty members may check out books for 180 days, but the books are subject to recall for use by another patron after three weeks.
  • SCAD staff (non-faculty) may check out up to 10 circulating books for two-week periods.
  • SCAD Alumni may check out up to five circulating books for two-week periods.

Renewals: Checked-out materials may be renewed online provided that:
  • The item is not on hold for another patron.
  • The item is not overdue.
  • The patron does not owe any fines to the library.
  • If unable to renew online, please bring the item(s) to the library in-person or call for more information.

Reference books, reserve materials, periodicals and special collections are for in-library use only.

Fines: Fines are charged on overdue materials at the following rates:
  • Circulating materials: 10 cents per day
  • Interlibrary loan materials: $5 per day
  • Reserve materials (limited in-library use only): $1 per hour
  • Fines can be paid in the library with cash or check (no credit cards). Please call the library if you are unable to pay a fine in-person.

Course reserves are materials selected by the faculty to support class instruction. Books, journals or audiovisual materials on course reserve are available for two hours of in-library use and must be requested by call number at the circulation desk. Students may retrieve the list of course reserve materials for their class through the library website by going to the library catalog and searching by course name or professor's name. Electronic reserves are password protected PDFs of articles or chapters that may be read online or downloaded.

Library archiving standards for theses
Compliance with the following guidelines will be verified by the thesis coordinator:
Paper quality
Theses must be printed on at least 20-pound bond paper of at least 25 percent cotton rag (heavier bond requires a slightly wider left margin).
Margins
Margins must be 1" at top, right and bottom, and 1½" on the left side.
Blank pages
An unnumbered blank page should be placed at the beginning and end of the thesis document and materials.
Signature page
A signature page, identical in format to the sample signature page in the Student Handbook, must be included. This page is unnumbered and includes a signature line for each committee member, with the committee member's name, title, thesis committee role and date. Original dated signatures are required. Signatures are listed in the following order: committee chair, topic consultant and editor (if applicable).
Title page
A title page of the style and format illustrated in the Student Handbook is required. This page should be unnumbered.
Thesis abstract
If a thesis abstract is required by the individual department, it must follow the title page, be paginated (unless department indicates otherwise in its departmental requirements) and included in the table of contents.
Submission forms
A "Thesis Submission and Release Form" must be completed and signed by students. This form is submitted with the thesis and is available at the Jen Library.
Bindery fee
A bindery fee of $12 (cash or check) is required at the time of submission. Checks should be made out to SCAD.

The information listed here is intended to address library standards for archiving and retention of theses. Questions about issues not addressed in these standards should be directed to the individual departmental guidelines.
