Inspiration for teaching:
You could say teaching is in my blood. Both my parents, my sister, my aunt, my cousin and my grandparents have all been educators. But, despite all that influence, I wanted to chart my own course. I wanted to design! After years in practice, however, something was missing. I love design, but somehow there was an ingredient that was left out of the mix. A friend invited me to critique his college studio class one day and that missing spark revealed itself. Interacting with the students engaged me in a way nothing else ever had. From then on I took every opportunity to get in a classroom. What I discovered was that I needed both design and teaching to feel complete. I need to be passionate about what I do to teach well. Nothing inspires me like teaching, and nothing engages my passion more than design. Together they form a perfect fit, a blend of passion and inspiration I hope I can pass along to my students.
Courses:
- INDS 209 Interior Materials
- INDS 204 Rendering for the Interior
Artist statement:
I've often been asked what drew me to interior design. Somewhere in my architectural career I just gravitated towards it - it wasn't something I thought about, it just seemed to happen naturally. Over the years, however, I think I've found an answer to the question and it lies in what separates interior design as distinct from architecture. Interior design concentrates on human interaction - it is not the object or monument that defines a skyline. It is instead the creation of places and experiences - the vessel that bounds beautiful moments of human interplay. I was always drawn to design by the desire to create moments of magical experience for others. That desire shapes everything I do, from my art and writing to my teaching and designs. Creating for myself has always been about creating for others at the same time. Interior design is personal, intimate, and interactive - what more could I ask for?

"After practicing design for a few years I decided to return to school for a master's degree in interior design. I enjoyed practicing design but felt that I might prefer teaching it. With degree complete, I took a two-year appointment as an entry-level instructor at Texas Tech University. Teaching won me over, and I have risen through the faculty ranks at multiple universities to attain multiple tenures and the ultimate rank of full professor. The exposure to learning and learners and the opportunities to engage students in developing their own design skills and talents continues to inspire me. Each term starts anew, each year offers challenges and possibilities. I am most satisfied with teaching graduate classes at SCAD but also enjoy the first undergraduate studio's enthusiasm for everything new in design. I enjoy curriculum development and gaining knowledge about learning and teaching."

Artist statement:
"My exhibited work has included jewelry, ceramics, a 3-D piece with social commentary but most frequently has taken the form of multi-media pieces. These compositions hold meaning beyond the arrangement of elements. They present a visual and often verbal narrative of something important to me. Most describe transitions and journeys and many include found objects or repurposed items as elements of the piece or as containers for the work. Surfaces with texture and/or the patina of time are essential elements of my work. Linking images and words is a vital component of each piece that I create. I enjoy unexpected outcomes and learning from the process. I have participated in juried exhibitions and sold many pieces that I wish I had kept."

"While in the healthcare profession I was always involved in the education of patients and their family members and thoroughly enjoyed it. Eventually, when I obtained my advanced degree, I was often assigned to teach and guide nurses in intensive care areas, and I always found this experience to be particularly rewarding. I continued to be involved in the education of staff and patients as I moved into the medical research field at two major academic medical centers.
"As you can see from my educational background, I love the classroom and learning new things! My more recent opportunity to be a college educator, combining my skills in design, knowledge of the healthcare field and enthusiasm for learning, has been a very rewarding experience for me. I find it challenging and exciting each time I enter the classroom to find students anxious and ready to learn and exchange ideas and thoughts."

"We all teach by example; whether we want to or not. Therefore, I model my own passion and commitment to interior design. The classroom is an important place to learn theory, to get to 'know it.' However, to be educated in a subject, to 'own it,' a student has to experience what it takes to connect the information learned in class with the real world applications.

Inspiration for teaching:
"My graduate education was a life-changing endeavor. The investigative curriculum of the M.F.A. program challenged the status quo of standard design and instilled in me the ability to see interior design as a catalyst for change: able to address sustainability challenges in immediate and meaningful ways through rigorous inquiry into the relationship of people and place. I teach because I have learned the value of questions; because I believe that creating opportunities where students come together to generate their own questions is how we will inspire the shared vision and fuel the innovative thinking necessary to change the world."
