Inspiration for teaching:
"I have been an interactive design and game development faculty member at SCAD for more than 10 years. My first teaching experience began in graduate school, first as a tutor and then as a teacher's assistant. It was at this point that I learned the potential of teaching as an art in and of itself. Raised in a family of educators and artists, the idea of teaching art was a natural fit. I enjoy creating a classroom environment that encourages learning through hands-on participation and permits the exchange of ideas between me, my students and their peers. I encourage students to think about the classroom environment as a place in which to explore and develop ideas. Watching students start with nothing more than a concept and raw passion and then finish with a tangible outcome while establishing lasting relationships with their peers along the way is amazing. I strive to captivate student interest by teaching them problem solving, organization, and fundamental art and design skills as they apply to game art and design."

Artist statement:
"With a background in sculpture and traditional art, I have directed my work in computer art on art in games. Digital and non-digital games are an effective medium for artists or designers to communicate their ideas. The development of any game is a collaborative environment that relies on the skills of many disciplines. Whether it is creating artwork for a video game to develop a cohesive visual style, or designing interactive environments to create an immersive experience, games have the potential of being a work of art in their own right or pure entertainment. Whatever the intent, games are not complete until someone chooses to interact with them. Designing an engaging experience for the player, games have pushed the envelope of human interaction with computers and have inspired me to focus my work toward the creation of interactive environments. With the computer's ability to combine many forms of expression, there is no reason why performance, installation and interactive artists should not take control of this medium and use it to bring their concepts and ideas to life."

"One of my greatest inspirations for teaching has been said during an interview about an icon in our society, who shall be unnamed: 'He wanted you to be great; and he wanted you to create something that was great; and he was going to make you do that.' My inspiration has always been to bring out the greatness from the untapped potential in our students. The ability to be able to see great designs and collaborate with great designers and artists has been an inspiration and reward in itself. The designers and artists are sometimes found amongst our colleagues while other times are found right in our classrooms in the students we teach, which is the inspiration that drives me."

Witnessing the transformation in my students as they become increasingly at ease with using software as a creative tool is something that I cherish as a professor."

Inspiration for teaching:
"One of my greatest inspirations for teaching has been said during an interview about an icon in our society, who shall be unnamed: 'He wanted you to be great; and he wanted you to create something that was great; and he was going to make you do that.' My inspiration has always been to bring out the greatness from the untapped potential in our students. The ability to be able to see great designs and collaborate with great designers and artists has been an inspiration and reward in itself. The designers and artists are sometimes found amongst our colleagues while other times are found right in our classrooms in the students we teach, which is the inspiration that drives me."

My personal artworks revolve around using digital mediums to enhance cultural awareness without sensationalizing on the technology. Prior to SCAD, I worked as a contract designer for several Web design firms and participated in two start-up companies. I also worked with designers and computer graphics scientists on interdisciplinary projects to build better models and environments for artists."
