Artist statement:
"Words become pictures, and pictures become words.
Words and pictures interact in a seamless transition from text to image and image to text.
Letterforms, words and paragraphs become pictures.
Pictures become readable symbols, or sets of symbols, expanding the alphabet far beyond the usual set of 26 legible signs.
New signs become readable and familiar signs take on new meanings within their new environment.
The arrangement of words on the page pleases the eye and assists with the expression of an idea.
Pictures contain stories. Not necessarily a "story," but story elements. A hierarchy exists within every picture: a main character; an antagonist; conflict; a climax; and finally resolution.
With the addition of a sequence an image changes the meaning of the image that precedes it, bringing drama, humor, anecdote and mythology.
But within this crowded environment, space is required for one additional element: the viewer.
Any work of art needs some aspect of incompleteness, be it ever so small.
This incompleteness is the portal by which the viewer can enter the work.
The finishing brush stroke, or the final full point, can be provided by the viewer.
The meaning of a picture is transformed as the viewer combines the text with the image.
The meaning of words are changed as the viewer scans the picture.
The gestalt, the sum total, changes from one viewer to the next."

Artist statement:
"I am an artist and designer who is passionate about painting and drawing. I have been involved with art my entire life and it largely defines who I am. Undoubtedly, I am happiest when drawing or painting from life, especially plein air painting in oils or watercolors. By far, my greatest challenge and passion is painting botanical illustrations of fruits and vegetables in watercolors because it involves my love of nature, drawing and painting.
"I tend to work in a more painterly, realistic style when painting landscapes. My botanical work, however, is a tighter style of watercolor painting rooted in observational drawing and the tradition of botanical painting while reflecting a love for the design and beauty of nature. My love of Italian art, culture and cuisine fuels much of my work and I particularly love teaching painting in Tuscany each summer."

It is my sincere hope that my work will take you out of the everyday world into a very special place!
"Recently, my journey into plein-air painting has added a new facet to art making. Capturing time and space in the moment at a location provides a very special personal reward. The use of a limited palette of acrylic paint on a toned surface allows for an impressionist approach to painting. This combination of materials and approach to painting at a predetermined location is a personal dream come true."

Artist statement:
"The purpose of illustration throughout history has been to chronicle and reflect the culture of the day, whether noble or base. The illustrator acts as a communicator, visually telling of things as they are, and things as they should be. But an illustrator also tells of things that could be, of worlds that are only imagined, and makes real the dreams and nightmares of mankind. They can take the complexities of the written word and give it clarity, or take the sublime nuance of a glance and make it richer, more complex, and more intriguing. Or, they can just make stuff look cool. I enjoy doing all of this."

Inspiration for teaching:
"Early in my illustration career, I kept hearing about many recent graduates in illustration and even seasoned professionals being taken advantage of by clients and illustrators under-bidding their jobs. I felt compelled to give back with what knowledge I have gained from being able to support my family with a full time freelance graphic artist career. I am able to prepare students, thanks to my successes and my failures, so the future illustrators I teach will be more prepared than I was after graduation. After I started teaching illustration, I quickly realized I could learn a great deal from my own students, which furthered my artistry and craving for all things illustration. Seeing the excitement in these young image creator's eyes, being proud of the recognition of their efforts and all of the possibilities before them adds to the joy I experience in guiding them on their journey."
