"Witnessing those moments when students are struck by a sudden ability within themselves to glimpse into the complexities of life in a way that provides them with some new understanding. Such moments can be earth-shaking, but they can also be modest - small epiphanies that help them make sense of their curiosities, their motivations, their surroundings and their future. And the professor's role might be more geared toward the cultivation of a relatively consistent rhythm of the modest moments, with the hope that the doors to the larger ones are nudged wider and wider."

Artist statement:
"There are many ways of presenting a vision of a more equitable future. Art, design, writing and facilitating are all creative acts that require determination and humility, and they all have the potential to create that vision in meaningful ways. Applying your creativity for a purpose bigger than yourself doesn't have to be a chore, or a burden, or too serious or controversial. In fact, when creativity springs from such a well, it sets demands upon the individual that illicit a sense, not of dread or obligation, but of wonder within that realm of engagement. Wonder and the desire for a world with more equality are not incompatible."

"I believe it is important to create an environment in which the students are encouraged and allowed to explore their craft, to find a voice and to discover new ways of thinking. Teaching is less about telling students the answers, more about presenting them with theory, concept and basic data, then letting their own research, understanding and experiences help them discover solutions uniquely their own. I encourage students to develop quality critical thinking skills so that they can rely on their own intuition and opinions to make logical and sound problem-solving decisions. Having an understanding of what they do and why they do it are the most important self-critiquing skills that a student can develop while in school. If they can get to that place, if they can develop an ability to realistically assess their own performance and ideas, students can create opportunities as they work professionally in which they are curious and continue with a desire to continually learn more about their profession."

"Typography has given me the opportunity to communicate and relate to my students through rigorous analysis and research. Through typography, students are able to create unique expressions through individual explorations while understanding the true vernacular of typography in the field of graphic design. My teaching focuses on an open communication through presentation, research materials, project definition development and critiques. Professionally, I want to share my experiences from my travels here and abroad in order to encourage students to become life-long learners who will contribute to the practice of their chosen field.
"What are my purposes and goals in teaching graphic design? My purpose in teaching graphic design is apparent when seeing the work presented in the exhibition. Essentially, it is to gain insight and knowledge through a rigorous sketching process, aesthetic development and semiotic analysis in the field of graphic design. For the student, this involves long hours and hard work (mentally and physically) at sometimes-tedious tasks. Through these simple exercises, they can perfect their manual skills, develop a clear thought process and begin the search for excellence solutions."

SCAD press release:
Inspiration for teaching:
"While I was a student at SCAD, I had the honor and privilege to work under professors who excelled in the field of graphic design. Being born and raised in a different culture with a different set of values, the university experience at SCAD was a great one. It inspired me to work on a path of sharing my knowledge and bringing out the best in the students I teach.
"As Albert Einstein said, 'It is the supreme art of a teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.' I make sure that my journey as an educator helps me to put these words into practice."

Artist statement:
"Communication design is a process of analyzing the target user, the information to deliver and the characteristics of communication media, and synthesizing the visual language/treatment for the information to make it understandable to the target users and also suitable for the media. My design process starts with primary research activities with mediating artifacts-the perceptible objects and activities that mediated the target user's knowledge and experiences-and the data generated are valuable sources of inspiration. The primary research data lead to new design opportunities of creating innovative and usable artifacts as they assist a designer's imaginative and playful thinking, and keep her design solutions grounded to the target user's needs."

Artist statement:
"As a graphic designer, I focus on visual communication that either relies solely on words with pure typography or integrates words with images. My work differs from that of a fine artist in that it entails solving specific design problems associated with printed materials, digital media or with a visual identity for an organization. My objective is to create unique and memorable solutions to these assignments. My work reflects an aesthetic sensibility that was cultivated as a teenager and later refined when I studied graphic design in college and in graduate school. It is based upon clarity, organization and economy of means. One design standard that I consistently pursue is the use of the fewest elements. Why use five images or typefaces when one is sufficient? The complexity in my work has more to do with the conceptual idea than with the visual result - which, compared to current trends, is often understated."

Artist statement:
"Visual communication design is a hybrid solution comprised of conveyed message and visual arrangement. The conveyed message is the soul of design, the visual arrangement is the body of design. Without the soul and the body evident in design, impact could not be created.
"In a conveyed message, all workable and innovative design should be created against a clearly defined message with an aimed set of objectives. If we spend enough time analyzing, questioning, clarifying and researching the message with objectives, the ideas flow easily.
"In visual arrangement, too much contrast can cause chaos while too much harmony can bring boredom. When contrast and harmony co-exist in the right amounts, a positive quality of the composition will exist. A good composition can be designed by skillful control of the design elements."

"I just love teaching. I love the exchange of ideas that takes place between students, and I find joy in all of it. If I can ignite the interest of students or draw connections for them that illuminate their ideas in any way whatsoever, I believe I will have made a small difference while on this earth. That, for me, is a profound pleasure."
Courses:
- GRDS 229 History of Graphic Design
- GRDS 348 Graphic Design Studio I
Artist statement:
"The intimate relationships that emerge when making portraits are exhilarating to me. Connecting, even if for only an instant, feeds my need to belong, to serve, to 'see.' Images have the potential to bring joy, to inform, to deepen our understanding of what surrounds each of us. Making images, for me, is a way to define the world and shed light on my most human experiences. "I believe that making images validates me, as though without doing so, I have not 'existed.' My eyes need to feast on the world's offerings, recording them so that they can continue their natural course while leaving me an imprint of our exchange. Colors, light, patterns and textures are the support cast to the relationship that evolves between the maker of the image and her subject.
"We are increasingly immersed in visual data - drowning in images morning to night. Finding the voice that separates me from another feels crucial at this time. Searching for a way to have image-making define me, or what I have become, is a goal toward which I am advancing with profound consideration. This moment in time is an enormous turning point for me - looping back to my origins as an artist and reconnecting to the path that I once traveled after a seemingly endless detour.
Making marks, whether digitally captured or drawn by hand, has always resided at the essence of my being. Without this, I lose myself, I become null. I have found a tremendous satisfaction in combining photography, drawing and collage. If I am to explore further, it will be to merge the various media that I have enjoyed, creating a visual communication that can shed light on my role in this world. So this is what I can offer: myself through my pictures. I hope you will enjoy the journey with me."
