Bibhu Mohapatra
Bibhu Mohapatra displayed an interest in fashion at an early age by designing clothes for his sister. His love of sumptuous Indian fabrics, vibrant colors and the crafts of his native land have been the inspiration behind his elegant designs. After receiving a graduate degree in economics in India, Mohapatra moved to New York City and began studying fashion. He was soon working as an assistant designer for the iconic American fashion label Halston and later as the design director for J. Mendel, where he became known for his glamorous gowns and work with luxurious furs.
Mohapatra’s namesake label launched during New York Fashion Week in February 2009, and his collection is currently sold at select boutiques in North America, Europe, Russia and the Middle East, as well as at Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.
Mohapatra was a finalist for the Women’s Apparel 2010 Rising Star Award by The Fashion Group International, the Young Innovator Award from the National Arts Club in 2010 and the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award in 2010. He is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and lives in New York City.
