This 13,783-square-foot, five-bay Italianate brick and stucco structure, with a second-floor balcony of intricate ironwork, survived the Civil War, fires, earthquakes and floods. Designed by John S. Norris, the building was originally a private residence. Among its outstanding architectural features is a delicate, unsupported spiral staircase that leads to a cupola.
